An Iraqi father has revealed that he was horrified when an ISIS fighter offered to shoot his four year old daughter after she was blinded in an airstrike on Mosul. Her father revealed in an interview with CNN that he pleaded with an ISIS fighter to spare his child after she lost her sight in the airstrike that killed her mother on March 17th of this year. Little Hawra was baking bread with her mother when the air strike took place. A cadre of ISIS jihadis had taken up residence in tunnels known as “ratlines” under the family’s home, which was one of three homes leveled in the attack. When Mr. Al-Tai found his daughter he had to plead his case to the jihadis to be allowed to take his daughter to a local hospital. ISIS fighters instead offered to shoot the four year old, claiming “Why do you want to save her, she is going to die anyway”.
Al-Tai described his ordeal in the moments after the airstrike hit. All that was left of his wife was her left leg attached to her torso, so he went looking for his daughter whose whimper he could hear. The discussion that followed defied reason.
“I could just hear her voice,” he recalls. “There was a block that had fallen on her. There was also a metal frame — that’s what lodged the shrapnel in her face and her eyes. I screamed for her mother, my aunt and uncle but no response.” Pulling her from the rubble, she was barely recognizable; she was black and looked charred. They begged the ISIS fighters to allow them to leave. Instead, an Iraqi ISIS member offered to kill his little girl, Hawra’. He (an Iraqi ISIS member) said ‘I could just shoot her,'” Ala’a remembers. “He said ‘why do you want to save her, she’s going to die anyways.'” They even pleaded to go further into ISIS territory in pursuit of medical assistance, but Ala’a says an Egyptian ISIS member, who he thinks was the head of that unit, told them they couldn’t leave because ISIS were using the remaining civilians as human shields.”

That is right, they could not leave because ISIS was counting on using the survivors as human shields. The war in Iraq has reached a whole new level of hell folks. As you can see in the video above, this is the new normal in ISIS held territory. Children and other civilians are routinely used by these vermin as human shields. This is a continuation of a disturbing trend played out over decades by Islamists in various nations. The speaker in the TED talk below describes taking up a paring knife to attempt to defend her father, a University Professor, in Algiers in the 1990’s, a decade marked by Islamist unrest and high intellectual body counts known as the “Dark Decade”.
While all of this is going on and little girls all over the Middle East are being married off to old men, women and girls face severe restrictions on their clothing and freedom of movement in ISIS controlled areas of Iraq. Where are Western Feminists? Oh, right I forgot. They are knitting hijabs for their daughters Barbies and donning hijabs in “solidarity” with Muslim women. Forgive me if I lose my lunch over all of this. I prefer a world where the Hawra’s of the world grow up happy and healthy and have boundless opportunities to do more than hope to marry a man when they are children who will condemn them to a second class citizens existence.
My heart aches for that little girl, and others like her. She is blinded and her mother torn apart while making bread, for heaven’s sake.
If we, in what I’d still like to call “The Free World”, leave things alone, her life and the lives of others caught by ISIS are sheer hell. If we attack ISIS, there will be civilians killed and maimed because of the barbaric and cowardly practice of “human shields”. There’s no answer that doesn’t bring tragedy. If only our weapons could seek out just these ISIS dirtbags.
George V,
I completely agree. It’s tragic no matter what. I take heart that her father risked his life to get her to help though. A radicalized man would have let her die-after all “just” a girl.
Unfortunately, I think that our approach needs to be like pulling off a bandage… Shock and Awe…destroy them as quickly as possible, with overwhelming firepower. While this will be tragic in some ways, and obviously lead to more civilian casualties in the short run, I believe that in the end, it will be fewer than the long drawn out trickle that we are currently trying. As an example, in WW II massive bombing campaigns leveled entire cities, and caused huge casualties, but ended the war quickly (if 4 years of our involvement can be considered quick). Contrast that with Vietnam, which if you don’t consider the war starting until the end of WW II, that war lasted nearly 30 years. While daily civilian casualties were much lower, given the duration of the conflict, the final total was much higher. It’s a tough choice to make, but a necessary one.
