I’ve been going through the Senate Republican phone list this morning, calling various Senators to urge them to vote “no” on this Porkzilla plan. The first person I called was Senator Mel Martinez (who I, incidentally, met last year). The DC office line was busy, but I got right through on his Florida line. I asked the woman on the phone — who was very polite and courteous, by the way — what Sen. Martinez’ position on this stimulus bill was. It was unfortunately not an encouraging answer.

She stressed that Sen. Martinez has not yet made a decision on how he will vote, that he is looking for a “bipartisan” solution that will eliminate some of the wasteful, long-term spending in favor of short-term spending.

Just let that sink in.

I asked her what he thought about how many Americans opposed this bill, about how much it will cost taxpayers, and about how much wasteful spending will come with it, and whether or not he has a statement on how that will affect his vote. She again stressed that he has not yet made a decision on how he will vote.

Add one more person to the squish column. Let’s try to move him to the “no” column, mmkay?

Folks, we need to be melting these phones, and not just the DC lines. Every DC number I’ve called has been busy, but the senators’ local lines are wide open. Those phones should be busy, too. I’m listing below the numbers of the Republican senators. Our Country Deserves Better has all of the Senate contact information, so go there if you’d like to contact your Democrat senators.

Please, please folks. Make your voices heard. Send a message. We can get through to these GOP senators. We just need to be loud enough… so speak up.
