A quote: “To be offended is a choice we make; it is not a condition inflicted or imposed upon us by someone or something else.” ~~ David A. Bednar

I’ll start with a story …

******************************************
>>Dear Rancho Vista Resident,

Your HOA is dedicated to curating a welcoming and inclusive community. Please note that Halloween is not celebrated by everyone.

You should avoid irreverent tombstones
No sexist staging of props (e.g. skeletons in gendered clothing)
No ugly witches (sexist, anti-Wiccan)
No goblins/orcs (racist)
No culturally inappropriate images, whether it is oppressed (hobos, Indians) or oppressors (Princesses, Cowboys).

You may safely display orange lights and generic pumpkins from Oct 30-31.

Sincerely<<

“Honey? Remember I was stumped about what to put up for Halloween?”
“Yes?”
“Our HOA just sent me a great list I just have to do!”

******************************************

Now, it’s your turn.

Does “Lets Go Brandon” 33 times count?

  • Navig8r says:

“Thanks for letting us use your place for our steam punk Halloween party. The antiques are way cool!”

“Happy to do it for our favorite grandson, although these ‘antiques’ are what we keep around for when the power goes out.”

“They did figure out the kerosene lantern quicker than I expected.”

“But not how to adjust the wick for no smoke.”

“Better get the fire extinguisher, dear.”

“Hey, we’re young, but we’re not that stupid ”

“Scream and a crash in ten, nine, ”

    “Wha??”

“Look how she’s holding it. That part of the lantern gets pretty hot pretty fast.”

“Since ancient times, we witches have granted boons for a price dear mortal. Ask what you will but know that it may be at a high cost.”
I rolled my eyes in answer. “Elizabeth, I know that Halloween-”
“Samhain,” she interrupted tersely. “The time when-”
“The barriers between worlds is thin. Yes, yes. I don’t care. And I know this is a special holiday for you. But keep the demons in your yard and if they try eating the kids like last year, the cops are going to show up.”
She sighed. “Crap. I thought the binding spell was good.”

What’s the purpose of a pointed hat? A wide brim will shade from the sun and protect from the rain but a point on the crown? Oh! Maybe to make a lowly woman look taller? In yesteryear, men overpowered women with strength and education. Perhaps the tall pointed hat gave her a presumption of superiority?

Never mind. I wear the pointed hat, though I don’t need to. I’m taller than most men, and because of karate, I am powerful. Call me witch. With a light in the darkness and my wand who will stand in my way?
