The U.S. Navy says that the sailor who was shot earlier this week at a military support center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has died.
Logistics Specialist, Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, 26, succumbed to wounds received on Thursday when Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez pulled up to his military targets in a rented, silver Mustang convertible, wearing a vest with extra ammunition, wielding at least shotguns and rifles and a handgun.
Smith’s death comes in addition to the four U.S. Marines killed at the scene-Lance Cpl. Squire K. Wells, Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, of Hampden, Massachusetts; Sgt. Carson Holmquist and Staff Sgt. David Wyatt, of Burke, North Carolina.
According to reports, Smith had lived in Paulding County, Ohio, before joining the service. Longtime friend, Cory Sholl talked with CNN after the incident:
Ohio Gov. John Kasich tweeted his condolences earlier this morning:
The murders in Chattanooga have claimed another victim, & Ohio has lost another hero. Prayers for Randall Smith of Paulding Co & his family.
Smith’s cousin, Tania Daugherty of Minneapolis, MN said that he underwent surgery Thursday afternoon, and was later taken to the trauma intensive care unit where he was placed on a ventilator, given 150 pints of blood and monitored closely. He suffered injuries to his liver and colon in the attack.
