Yes, you read the headline correctly. The 3rd Graders weren’t writing letters to someone like Bon Jovi, or Governor Christie. Nope. Instead, the “Get Well Soon!” letters were written to a person in prison who was convicted for brutally murdering Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981.
What could possibly be wrong with this scenario? Well let’s see, how about the fact that the teacher even THOUGHT that having students write letters to a dangerous criminal would be some type of learning experience? I truly wonder how the teacher explained about the assignment? Did the teacher inform the class about this guy’s background and what he was actually in prison FOR? Chris Martin at IJReview reports that this guy in prison is you know, so nice:
In 1981, Mumia Abu-Jamal shot and killed Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner at point-blank range. The former Black Panther was convicted and sentenced to death, but later was moved off death row and now remains imprisoned for life in Pennsylvania’s State Correctional Institution.
Oh yeah, he’s top notch isn’t he? He’s also a guy who has never shown remorse for his actions, has somehow managed to develop a cult-like following among idiotic celebrities such as Whoopie Goldberg, had a street in France named after him, and even ran a radio broadcast for a while …FROM prison! A killer is celebrated and a good police officer, Daniel Faulkner is not. There is something so wrong about that scenario.
