A Minnesota woman named Anmarie Calgaro is suing several Minnesota state agencies for parental rights concerning her seventeen year old transgender son, as reported by the Washington Times. This case raises so many points that it is difficult to know where to begin. I admit that I am cisgendered. That’s a start.
Anmarie Calgaro is suing the Minnesota agencies, not because she disagrees with her son, but because her child is being given powerful drugs by the State of Minnesota. She has not consented and cannot see the medical reports.
Here is the backstory briefly. Anmarie Calgaro gave birth to her son when she was a teenager and unmarried. The child, known as J.D.K. in court papers, went to a Minnesota Legal Aid office. With the help of Legal Aid, J.D.K. wrote a self-emancipation letter alleging that his mother did not wish to have anything to do with him and had not reported him missing for over six months. Minnesota courts rejected this self-emancipation letter when the J.D.K. applied for a legal name change.
