Already classified as one of the worst storms in U. S. history, Hurricane Harvey dumped trillions of gallons of water on Houston and surrounding areas. Now, twelve years since Hurricane Katrina battered New Orleans and parts of Louisiana, Texas prepares for a third band of storms to hit an already devastated area. Amidst all this, President Trump, along with First Lady Melania Trump and key members of his administration arrived in Texas to be briefed on the current situation and to reassure the state that the federal government was not going to stand in silence as the state fights to recover.
The President chose to fly in to Corpus Christie, where Hurricane Harvey did not cause as much damage as in other areas. As noted in this article from the New York Times, his decision was based on wanting to be as close to the worst damage as possible without having his presence disrupt the ongoing rescue efforts.
During his comments, President Trump assured those impacted by Harvey that, “We are going to get you back and operating immediately.” He went on to say, “It’s epic what happened, but you know what, it happened in Texas, and Texas can handle anything.”
