Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
Once upon a time in America, school children were taught the phrase “Never Again” in relation to the Holocaust. We are reaping the fruits of this ignorance as coffee shop employees refused to let a Jewish woman back into the restroom to document Antisemitic phrases written in the facility.
