Some people really, really don’t want anyone to celebrate Thanksgiving. Especially if they’re of European heritage.

In 1970, the United American Indians of New England decided to establish their Thanksgiving commemoration as a “National Day of Mourning.” The group posted on its Facebook page:

Thanksgiving day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands, and the relentless assault on Native culture. Participants in National Day of Mourning honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection as well as a protest of the racism and oppression that Native Americans continue to experience.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, in their relentless quest to find bigotry in every (white) corner of this land, developed a lesson plan for classroom teachers. Entitled “Thanksgiving Mourning,” the lesson plan states that “For some Native Americans, Thanksgiving is no cause for celebration, but rather serves as a reminder of colonization’s devastating impact on indigenous peoples.”

And in a Wednesday interview with the leftwing news hour “Democracy Now,” aggrieved historian Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz called the story of Thanksgiving “the beginning of genocide.” She claimed, “Actually, it’s never been about honoring Native Americans. It’s been about the origin story of the United States, the beginning of genocide, dispossession and constant warfare from that time—actually, from 1607 in Jamestown—until the present. It’s a colonial system that was set up.”

It’s funny how these groups love to air their grievances while using social media developed through the oppressive American capitalist system.
