The Battle of Gettysburg raged for the first three days of July in 1863, nearly 152 years ago. The 2015 Battle of Confederate Images is continuing to rage on, and on, and on.

At Gettysburg National Military Park, the decision was made to remove all free-standing Confederate flag items. (What will the battlefield re-enactors do? Unless they’re banned, too.) California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-CA) wants to change the name of a San Diego elementary school named after General Robert E. Lee; likewise, former San Antonio mayor Julián Castro wants a high school named after Lee in that city to drop the name. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu wants to remove a statue of the general perched on a column in the middle of Lee Circle. Forget the fact that in 1975, the esteemed general’s citizenship was posthumously restored by President Gerald Ford — Robert E. Lee has got to go!

But you know whose portrait remains displayed in the Old Senate Chamber in Washington DC? None other than the late virulent racist and former KKK Exalted Cyclops, Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-WV).  His portrait was unveiled in 2007 by none other than Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV).

Want to know how racist Byrd was? Not only was he the founder of the KKK chapter for which he ruled as ‘Exalted Cyclops,’ in 1946 he penned these reprehensible words in a letter to a Mississippi Congressman as the US Army prepared to desegregate:

“I would never fight with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”

Guess who tried to excuse the old Cyclops for his KKK membership? It was none other than former President Bill Clinton, husband of Hillary Clinton, aka She Who Would Be President.

So why is the late Senator given a pass?

Well, first of all, he was a Democrat. The Left will give a pass to any politician who sports the big D after his or her name.

Secondly, there are all those earmarked projects he brought into West Virginia — some $3 billion dollars worth in federal money — which are named after him. A list of those projects named after Byrd can be viewed at his tribute website.

The hypocrisy here stinks to high heaven.

I am reminded of the 1973 movie Paper Moon about a con man and his young daughter. One of the film’s lines reminds me of Democrats and their scruples: “Scruples? . . . . If you got got ’em, it’s a sure bet they belong to someone else!”
