Aging Tuskegee Airman Robbed and Carjacked in St. Louis

On Sunday night in St. Louis, an elderly black man was the victim of two crimes, both occurring separately.

It’s shameful that any innocent person is a victim of crime. It’s even more shameful that anyone would target an elderly person. But what makes these crimes even more egregious is that the 93-year-old victim is one of the last remaining members of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, World War II fighter pilots who comprised the first black aviators in the United States military.

The unnamed victim was driving to his daughter’s house about 11:30 at night when he became lost. He stopped to call her for assistance, and a man entered his car and took his cash, then fled in another car.

The man attempted to follow the perpetrator in his car, but lost sight of him. He then drove on and spotted two black males at an intersection, pulled his car over, and got out to ask them for help. Instead of helping the elderly man, the two men carjacked him, driving away in his 2012 Honda Accord.

What is wrong in our cities when elderly people become easy victims of prey, especially an elderly man who put his life on the line 70 years ago to defend this country?

Morgan Freeman narrated the following short video about the Tuskegee Airmen, of which this elderly man was a part. In World War II, these pilots not only fought the Luftwaffe, but battled prejudice back home as well.

The legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen is of special importance to me. My father is a 91-year-old veteran of World War II who was stationed in 1944 with the 15th Army Air Force, 483rd Bomb Group, in Italy. He was well-acquainted with the ‘Red Tails,’ as his B-17 bomb group was escorted by these pilots to their targets in southern Europe and in Germany. To this day he retains the utmost respect for these men.

Black Lives Matter? It’s a shame that the well-being of this aging black hero didn’t matter to the thug perpetrators of the two crimes he endured in St. Louis late on a Sunday night.
