Why The World Should Continue to Watch Sudan and Meriam Ibrahim

When Meriam Ibrahim, the Christian woman sentenced to death in Sudan for apostasy, was released from a Sudanese prison last week many across the world were jubilent. I decided to hold off on popping that champagne cork and when I heard that she had been re-arrested early this week, I was glad I had. It seems that she presented a travel document issued by the government of South Sudan-a nation founded by Christians in 2011 after years of fighting with the Islamic government in Khartoum-at the airport in Khartoum in an attempt to bring her children back to the United States. As a mother, and as an American, I cannot blame her at all. That would  have been my first action as well since she has been receiving death threats since her release. After all her husband and her children are American citizens and if anyone could qualify for political asylum I would think her case, widely  covered in the global media would make it a slam dunk for any attorney willing to take it on.

According to a legal advice website on who qualifies for political asylum in the U.S.A. those who can demonstrate a “well founded fear or persecution” that would carry into the future and be tangible are eligible. Considering that her legal team were receiving death threats on the assertion that their defense of Meriam was “un-Islamic” I am pretty sure the borders should swing wide open for her and her two children without much discussion needed at this point.

Unfortunately for Meriam, it seems that Nancy Pelosi and her ilk will not be acting as the welcoming commitee for the Wani family any time soon since Meriam and her two children are taking refuge in the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum presently in order to assure their safety. The saddest thing is that the Sudanese government could have released her knowing that there are Islamists in the country that have threatened to kill Meriam for her “crime” of apostasy-one of them claims to be her half brother, Al-Samani Al-Hadi. In a beautiful piece on Breitbart’s Big Peace, Faith J.H. McDonnell points out:

“The latest BBC news, at approximately 5:20 PM ET, quoted State Department representative Marie Harf who said that the Sudan government had assured the U.S. that the family was safe. The BBC reported, “The US says it is working with Sudan to ensure a woman freed from death row can leave the country, amid confusion over whether she is still being held.”

Khartoum excels in confusion. The airport confusion could very well be deliberately caused by the Khartoum regime for no further reason than to inflict parting trauma on the infidels before they leave the country. Or it could be to show the Sudanese people who cheered for Meriam’s freedom just who is in charge. Or, God forbid, it could be used to release the family without a means to leave the country, vulnerable to mob violence, which may or may not in actual fact be regime violence.”

I guess all the world can do at this point is pray and continue to shine the bright light of the global media into the pit of corruption that is Sudan in the hopes of saving Meriam and her family until our present administration gets their collective heads out of their rectums, or until a new one takes over.
