A quote: “Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.” ~~ William Jennings Bryan

I’ll start with a story …

*****************************

How were we ever this young? Your little, red pony car, windows down, AM radio dialed up, we raced the sun to the shore. Danced in front of it. Made love as the stars came out.

We went on to different lives states apart, until last year. Your husband had passed, my wife left years ago. We laughed, ending each call with a promise to get together. Until the call that came from your daughter.

Here I am, tucking the pic into your casket, giving you a final kiss. Sorry it’s only a copy. The original is going with me.

*****************************

Now, it’s your turn.

You can hear the radio playing some recent hit, smell the air, and feel the new rising sun. There is a certain life to the old pictures that digital simply can’t reproduce.

Dad smiled wistfully at the picture. “The only thing I don’t have from that picture is the car. Sold that about a year after that was taken.”

“Don’t have that car?” I replied. “Look outside.”

Mom grinned as dad got up and saw the truck offloading the red Mustang. As his jaw dropped, I said “Happy anniversary, mom and dad. Why not go out to the beach today?”

That’s Grandma Fox standing there on the shores of Lake Mead, greeting the rising sun. It’s hard to believe she was ever so young, but there she is on the trip she and Grandpa made right after they finished high school.

According to her, he’d taken this picture right before he proposed to her. They’d gone up to the lake the night before so they could have the big moment right there on the shore as the sun came up. And when Grandma saw the sunrise, she was so overwhelmed by its beauty that she jumped out like she wanted to embrace the whole wide world.
