Sadly, the answer to that question is yes. A Tucson school will be doling out two forms of punishment: one for Hispanic and African-American kids, and another for white kids. The penalty for a misbehaving student will depend on their offense and the color of their skin.
Welcome to race-based discipline in America’s schools. I do believe that we have come completely full circle.
The board is calling for a two-tiered form of student discipline. One for Black and Hispanic students; one for everyone else.
With the goal of creating a “restorative school culture and climate” that conveys a “sense of belonging to all students,” the board is insisting that its schools reduce its suspensions and/or expulsions of minority students to the point that the data reflect “no ethnic/racial disparities.”
From the section of the 52-page plan titled “Restorative School Culture and Climate,” subhead, “Discipline”:
“School data that show disparities in suspension/expulsion rates will be examined in detail for root causes. Special attention will be dedicated to data regarding African-American and Hispanic students.”
The board approved creating an “Equity Team” that will oversee the plan to ensure “a commitment to social justice for all students.”
The happy-face edu-speak notwithstanding, what the Tucson Unified School District board of governors has approved this summer is a race-based system of discipline.
Offenses by students will be judged, and penalties meted out, depending on the student’s hue.
Certainly, from the point of view of a public-school administrator, such a policy is beyond insane.
TUSD principals and disciplinarians (assuming such creatures still exist) are being asked to set two standards of behavior for their students.
Some behavior will be met with strict penalties; some will not. It all depends on the color of the student’s skin.
It is an invitation to chaos.
An invitation to chaos is an understatement.
Of course, it couldn’t possibly be that more minorities are getting suspended because more of them are misbehaving. It must be those evil, racist white kids who aren’t doing anything wrong!
In all seriousness, it’s ironic that the school claims to be doing this out of a “commitment to social justice to all students”. I guess what they really mean is social justice for all students… except white students. If more minority students are getting suspended, teachers and administrators might consider trying to figure out the root of the problem. Is it the gangsta rap culture? Out-of-wedlock pregnancies? The welfare system? Single family homes? Lack of a real authority figure at home? All of these are problems that overwhelmingly face minority students. Liberals like to act as if teachers can change students lives, and they can. But apparently, these teachers don’t want to put the effort in to change these students’ lives. Making a difference means actually taking the time to get to know the student and finding out why they are acting out so often. Isn’t that what all those hard-working, crusading teachers in the movies that liberals so adore do? But no, in this case, rather than working to make these kids lives better, they’re setting them up for further failure by doing nothing more than lowering the bar more for them.
If they really care about social justice for minority kids so much, then why are they giving them a free pass? All it will do is make it harder for these minority kids to make it in the real world. When these minority kids get out of school and into a job, if they keep messing up over and over again they aren’t going to get a free pass from their bosses just because they are black or hispanic. And they’ll just end up failing in the career world as well.
Finally, we need to just call this exactly what it is: racism. So many liberals are racists in the name of eradicating racism and giving minorites a “fair chance”. But discriminating against someone on the basis of their skin color is still racism, even if you’re discriminating against white people. These white kids don’t deserve harsher punishments for the same offenses just because they’re right, and it’s despicable that it’s happening here. The parents of these children should be outraged, and this policy should be repealed immediately.

“We are now a post-racial America” indeed.
I live in Tucson. I have two grandchildren in the TUSD system. I go to the classes on a regular basis. My/Our children are being taught absolutely NOTHING. There is no curriculum. There are no standards. There is no disipline. My grandkids have learned math NOT in the TUSD schools, but by sitting at MY kitchen table. There is a clue there…
Pure Rubbish. Name the school. Evidence Please. Just another deluded right wing wish. If this story was true it would create a national uproar. So why dont you shame it and name it.
Hey Nigel, you dumbnut,
It said Tucson Unified School District (see? a name), which means it won’t be implemented in just one school but in a whole district and it won’t be a national uproar because the mainstream media won’t report it. Next time, perhaps you should actually read the article (and by all means use some critical thinking) before you shoot your mouth off…
Really Matt, Name the School. Oh and I am very sure it will be reported by National Media, if it was true. We shall see DUMBNUT.
I say… Someone isn’t tuned in to the liberal media’s deaf ear. How about ACORN? They have near completely ignored it. Van Jones? He was a significantly minor story AFTER he resigned. No, I daresay we won’t hear a peep about this.
Oh, and Mat? Don’t feed the trolls. They come back for more.
The sad thing isn’t that this has been actually proposed, it’s that it has been proposed and no one really doubts that it could happen.
Why not also grade on a sliding scale? Black and hispanic students tend to do worse than white and asian students, so why not give them an immediate letter grade bump, to make things more fair of course.
Chris,
It was a one shot deal on my part. Nigel’s response makes it pretty clear that he’s hoplessly imbecilic enough to not understand my point. No reason why I should continue with that clown.
