Boston has opened its doors to the few and the proud this week for Marine Week! And it sounds like a spectacular event.
During May 3 – 9, 2010 the city of Boston will open its doors to hundreds of Marines for Marine Week Boston! This event will honor and recognize the contributions of Marines, including Boston-based hometown heroes and their families.
Spectators can expect to see Marines volunteering with community groups, hosting physical fitness challenges and sports clinics in city parks and showcasing state-of-the-art Marine vehicles, aircraft and equipment. Bostonians can also enjoy musical performances by various Marine musical ensembles throughout the week. The full Marine Week schedule of events will be posted here in April 2010.
Leading up to May 3rd, be on the lookout for Marines at local events, including St. Patrick’s Day Parades, and the Boston Marathon.
So far, Boston residents got to feel the wrath (so to speak) of an Osprey, a Marine Corps helicopter. I say “feel the wrath” because we get them all the time. Ospreys fly out of MCAS New River, which is here in Jacksonville — along with Camp Lejeune, Camp Geiger, and Camp Johnson. Ospreys fly over my house several times a day, and they literally make your walls shake and your windows rattle in their panes. By now, I’m used to it — but when you first move here, it’s a little scary, especially when you add in the muffled explosions you hear from ammunitions drills.
Boston has a long, proud history with the Marine Corps. It is currently home to the 25th Marine Regiment, the USS Constitution, the Charleston Navy Yard, and the oldest Marine Corps barracks. Throughout the week, I’ll cover Boston’s hometown heroes and the events that take place to honor Marines in Boston. If you live in the area, you can see the event schedule here. Stop on by and meet a few heroes. Thank them for their service.
Trust me, they do not hear it enough.
And two thumbs up to Boston for taking a week to honor the few… the proud… the MARINES!

Pretty dry up there, water-wise. Pack lots of bottled water.
Does anyone have pictures from marine week and if so, are they posted somewhere? My son is out of new river and was there, also a huge boston red sox fan. thanks
