Worried about offending Germans, Obama decided not to visit Normandy during his whirlwind tour of Europe. And why should he? It’s not like the bodies of over 9,000 American heroes are buried there or anything.
Oh, wait…
Barack Obama, concerned about offending Britain and Germany, rebuffed strenuous attempts by President Nicolas Sarkozy of France to persuade the new American president to make a trip to Normandy this week.
White House officials travelled to France at the start of March to discuss a visit by Mr Obama to Omaha Beach, the site of the American Cemetery, established in 1944 just after D-Day and where 9,387 American personnel are buried. Among them is Theodore Roosevelt Jr the eldest son of the 26th US President.
French officials and senior American military officers walked with White House staff through the cemetery discussing how the two presidents might follow the same route. But even before their trip, the White House had decided that Mr Obama would not travel there this week.
“It wasn’t going to happen,” said an American official in Washington. “We went through the motions to placate President Sarkozy but giving special treatment to France was not on our agenda.
So, Obama pretended like he cared about Normandy only to placate President Sarkozy? Apparently our “citizen of the world” president isn’t too concerned with honoring American history and sacrifice. I mean, really, what does it tell you when the president of France has more respect for fallen American heroes than the actual President of the United States? President Sarkozy apparently understood the need to visit Normandy.
Yet Obama saw it only as giving special treatment to France?
Apparently, our genius president doesn’t understand that visiting Normandy has nothing whatsoever to do with giving special treatment to France. It’s about honoring the sacrifices of American heroes who died on that beach, who sacrificed their lives to stop the onslaught of evil. Of course, giving your life to stop evil men is something that Obama and his liberal friends would never understand, because to them, there is no such thing as “evil”. They want to understand bad people, they want to sympathize with criminals, because they think that if you can sympathize with them, you can rationalize with them. They may have good intentions, but they’re completely misguided, and they cannot understand that, when confronted with evil, you cannot rationalize with it. There is no diplomacy you can practice. The only thing you can do is destroy it. And thousands upon thousands of American heroes who understood this sought to exterminate evil forces on that beach in WWII.
Obama couldn’t even bother to stand there and honor them.
Hat Tip: Right Wing News
But he was deferring to Britain and Germany to avoid offending them so he was giving them special treatment.
After his disgraceful attempt to make veterans pay for war-related injuries with their own private insurance, it’s only fitting that he not sully the memory of those Americans who fell at Normandy!
Obama took a situation that should have honored the sacrifices of Americans in World War II and turned it into a political game, pure and simple. Talk about despicable.
I’m just curious why it would have pissed off the Brits? Didn’t they also make sacrifices at Normandy? They, of all people, should understand that. As for the Germans, who really cares what they think?
And quite frankly, it is Obama’s fault. It has nothing to do with the Germans or the Brits but how Sarkozy feels about him. Sarkozy made some disparaging remarks about Obama’s foreign policies during the election and Obama took this “opportunity” to snub him back. Talk about childish and a lack of class.
Ditto on what Shannon and Mark said.
Two questions:
1. How exactly would visiting the graves of American soldiers in France offend the Brits?
2. When exactly did Obama start caring about offending the Brits?
I think it is fair to say that, beyond the usual political considerations, some of the biggest questions in the minds of Republicans and other non-Democrat voters had to do with President Obama’s level of patriotic commitment to America, the sincerity of his Christian faith, and his perceived bigotry, especially toward the British and the ethnically-British descendants of their former colonies, both here and around the globe. So far he has gone out of his way to thumb his nose at these concerns. It’s going to be a long, dreary four years.
So the unlearned and unwashed President was not willing to offend the Krauts, but rather insulted his own country. And I thought that Obama was supposed to our president, and not President of Europe.
He probably thought that it was the Russians that landed at Normandy. Or maybe the Romulans.
He hasn’t exactly dazzled with his knowledge of WWII history so far…
Cassy, I don’t in my lifetime believe I’ve seen anyone as virulently anti-American as your own President..and I’m 63.
This should remove any lingering doubts about who Omamba ows alligiance to.
And I think it is deeper than people realize.
The French people, the citizens out away from the government, have always been grateful to the American soldiers and have long been quick to escort tourists to the American graves, which are always well cared-for.
I think the President of France was trying to show again that the French Government has tried to straighten out its thinking.
And Omamba pissed on his shoes.
It is probably just as well that he didn’t go there. Imagine some of the questions “Historical Scholar” President would have asked:
1. “Why do they call it D-Day when it happened it Normandy?”
2. “Omaha Beach? I didn’t think Omaha had a beach? I thought Omaha was in Nebraska?”
3. “Why didn’t someone try negotiating instead of going to war?”
With Obama’s appeasement policy with dictators, it is as though he is only in year 1937 or 1938 of his US history book.
“With Obama’s appeasement policy with dictators, it is as though he is only in year 1937 or 1938 of his US history book.”
And he only knows what is in the Cliff Notes.
I have to agree that, as The President of the US, some sort of “appearance” MIGHT have been appropriate. Perhaps on a day specifically set aside to honor such remembrances, lest we forget.
However, Mr. Obama’s (and entourage/logistics required) presence on such a site, as an aside during his Chamberlainesque appeasement world tour, is a waste of taxpayers dollars, as well as as inappropriate as a commencement appearance/”honorary” doctorate bestowal at a Catholic University.
Then again, so much of what acolytes to the Democrat “Party” have been instructed to deem poignant is….academic…isn’t it.
In addition to the questions put forth by Ironwolf32 above, I offer
this timely and topical one-
4.Mr. President, What did the VERY FIRST sortie for these US Marines address?
For four months now I’ve been feeling like Natalie Wood in “Miracle on 34th Street”. “I believe, I believe, it’s silly but I believe.” Except mine was “I’ll be fair, I’ll be fair, it’s silly but I’ll be fair.” The disrespect he showed to these fallen heroes just sent me over the edge. It’s all a political game for him. There’s no leadership here…just opportunities/crisis for political gain.
I wonder what history books has your President read. I wonder if he will apologize to Germany for having delivered it from Hitler, so as not to offend them. I wonder if he will apologize to Great Britain for the War of Independence, so as not to offend them. Does president Obama think past history is something to be ashamed of?
It is becoming clearer every day that President Obama has not his eyes on Europe (and I don’t blame him, we Europeans are to blame for our weak support of the US in the past). He is trying to be on friendly terms with everybody, just doing this: smile, smile, smile, say the US has been wrong in the past but that he will mend things, request support (which, again, Europue will not give), and then … turn around and forget about us. Don’t worry. Europeans will still love him. We are still too attached to absolutism.
Very sad.
The kids buried at Normandy were killed trying to assist Europe in throwing off a Socialist zealot. That wasn’t the message Obama wanted to be associated with. He rather likes Socialist zealots.
If Obama had gone to Normandy American Cemetary he may have been confronted with the fact that there are bigger things in this world than him. Can’t have that now, can we?
Just a comment about your remark concerning “evil” –
#1) Are you a mother? If so, what if your child had done something you categorize as “evil” – what if he/she had done it out of a. religious belief b. coersion c. threatened with bodily harm if he/she did not do this “evil” thing d. any other reason besides a conclusion that he/she is inherently “evil”. Would you want your child “destroyed” or would you prefer someone had the compassion to first treat with them and try to understand them?
#2) President Obama did not PERSONALLY decide not to visit Normandy. He does not personally plan these agendas – his staff and his staff’s staff does.
#3) I see you failed to mention that he IS going to visit Normandy in June when there is more time to properly honor this site.
