A quote: “And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.” ~~ Luke 2:51
I’ll start with a story …

“Who is this?”
“A boy”, the machines will detect lies but telling truth, even deceptively, doesn’t trigger the alarms.
“Obviously ‘a boy’ but who? What’s his name? We have no record of him.”
I shrug, “I don’t know his name.” Another truth. The rescuers were direct in telling me they’d change his name just for this reason.
After the first glance, I show no interest in the picture. It is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, to ignore my child.
“You will answer!”
I realize they have no idea of where he is.
Oh yes, it is all worth this.

Now, it’s your turn.

That’s Sam when we were kids. Fun guy. He had this uncanny ability to stay looking clean no matter how messy things got. Neighborhood parents knew better than to dress the rest of us in white. He got away with a lot of things the rest of us got in trouble for. That talent served him well in the Army. As we were outprocessing, I asked him where he was going next. He joked that if he told me he would have to kill me. I figured one of the three letter agencies scooped him up. Never saw him since.
“You realize that you don’t look very convincing.”
“What do you mean?”
“Seriously; look around you. Creek over there, muddy paths over there and a lot of grass. Your white clothes make you stand out.”
A moment later, the clothes were different, covered in mud, grass stains and debris. “Is this better?”
“Much. Look, just protect the kids and make sure that they hear their parents calling for them. In return, a bottle of whiskey and a loaf of bread every month.”
“Agreed,” he said.
I don’t like the fae, but will deal with them when they are being reasonable.
That picture on the mantel is my eldest. It was his first day of third grade and we dressed him up in the new outfit his grandma gave him.
There always was a mischievous streak in Reggie. Even the Naval Academy couldn’t knock it out of him. So I wasn’t surprised when he got crosswise with the powers that be at NASA and got exiled to the Far Side of the Moon.
On the other hand, it did give him the kick in the behind he needed to finally marry his girlfriend. Looks like our grandchildren will be the first lunar natives.
