A quote: “When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.” ~~ Confucius

I’ll start with a story …

*********************************************

Somewhere over the years, the brilliant young man who was my uncle turned into the eccentric that All Correct Thinking People avoided.

Or maybe he just remained brilliant as the world changed.

The death of my mother, his beloved little sister and my father – their lives forfeit to the mobs who drove them out of university – made him the sudden guardian of a 10 y/o niece.

Uncle’s reclusiveness allowed us to slip under the mobs’ notice. I learned early to play True Believer to the visiting social workers eager to find fault with Uncle.

Our escape drew near.

*********************************************

Now, it’s your turn.

    Perfect

“ Who cuts your hair? Mine isn’t right. “
She turned, and laughed. He was bald.

It was coffee, dinner, marriage in three months

“ Motor home, tour the country? Can’t afford it. “
“ We can. I have money. It bothers most men, so I didn’t tell
    you. “

That year went quickly. She was tired, sleepy. She handed him a card. “ Call. Tomorrow at eight. “

The doctor said, “ She’s fine, can leave tomorrow. New heart, relays, control program. “

    He stared.

The doctor smiled. “ No idea, right? Good. Fifth generation. Perfect, isn’t she?

The airship shook violently under the dragons’ assault. “Steady on and prepare to attack!” the Captain called. I braced myself as the clouds floated under us.

“Captain!” I called. “Bring us in a little closer.” She nodded and opened the sails.

“What are you planning?” she asked.

I grinned and hefted my sword. “I’m going to take them out-”

Mom’s voice broke the spell and we were in a well made tree house in the backyard. I smiled at Samantha as we looked down.

“You staying for dinner?” I asked. She nodded.

“We would have had them” she said firmly.

  • Sheila Garrett says:

“I don’t know; she’s not connecting with anyone.”
The woman looked into deep brown eyes; distant, uncaring, bored. The body language said the same thing, she didn’t care what they did.
“Do you have her papers?” The man handed her a thin folder and the woman looked inside. Then she shook her head. “Don’t you people even read these backgrounds.”
The woman squared up with her new partner. “Sitz” she commanded. Immediately her tail hit the concrete. Her ears perked and tail beat on the floor.
“Platz.” And the German Shepard bellied down, mouth bent in a huge doggie grin.
