Jill Biden and Her Less Than Stellar Dissertation

Jill Biden is what some in military circles might call a “ring knocker.” My son-in-law told me what that term meant when he was a senior at the Naval Academy. In short, it refers to service academy seniors who bang their huge class rings on desks, mainly to intimidate underclassmen, especially plebes. He probably did so when he was a senior.

But now he rarely wears his ring in public, and never boasts of having graduated from USNA. That kind of attitude doesn’t work well in the real world. He refuses to be That Guy:

“These unfortunate few are unaffectionately called “Ring Knockers” because they will never shy away from bragging about their time at the academy. And holy f*ck, are these smug a**holes a headache.”

Now doesn’t that sound like someone who’s been in the news lately? Perhaps a designated First-Lady-To-Be, hmm? Like Jill Biden, who refers to herself as “Dr. Jill Biden,” and insists that all Americans do so as well?

Because we’re not worthy of such a brilliant FLOTUS!

Jill Biden

KnowYourMeme.com.

But as we’ve learned recently, Mrs. Biden (yes, I said it!) holds a doctorate in education. An Ed.D, not an MD. She is not a medical doctor, even though she fooled the geniuses on “The View.” One of the cackling hens, Whoopi Goldberg, in fact, called her a “hell of a doctor” and thought she would make a great surgeon general.

However, the truth finally came out, leading one former instructor at Northwestern University in Chicago to advise Jill Biden to stop the puffery. In a Wall Street Journal opinion piece, Joseph Epstein wrote:

“A wise man once said that no one should call himself “Dr.” unless he has delivered a child. Think about it, Dr. Jill, and forthwith drop the doc.”

Whereupon feminist Screaming Mimis expressed their outrage at this misogynistic man who dared to not only insult Dr. Jill Biden, but all teachers across the land as well! How dare he!

One of those is Heidi Stevens, an apparently young thing (as best as I can tell from her photo) at the Chicago Tribune, who huffed:

“We didn’t just hate the Dr. Jill Biden op-ed by Joseph Epstein for its condescension. We hated it for its contempt for educators.”

Perhaps Ms. Stevens should examine the “educators” in her city of Chicago who refuse to go back into the classroom. Whose union instead tweeted that “The push to reopen schools is rooted in sexism, racism, and misogyny.” (Although I’m sure Mrs. Biden would concur with the Chicago Teachers Union.)

But with this being the age of the internet, it didn’t take much for sleuths to dig up Mrs. Biden’s doctoral dissertation. Entitled Student Retention at the Community College: Meeting Students’ Needs, Biden’s academic opus is, in fact, a hot mess. Not only did she limit her “research” to two students at Delaware Technical Community College, along with a handful of colleagues, but she apparently doesn’t do maths too good. Not even basic grade school math. From her dissertation, which you can find here:

“Three quarters of the class will be Caucasian; one quarter of the class will be African American…the remaining seats will be filled with students of Asian descent or non-resident aliens.”

And this comment:

“After Roosevelt’s death, Truman, as the next president, created the Truman Commission.”

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

Tucker Carlson at Fox News merrily ran Jill Biden through the wringer on Wednesday, as only Carlson can do.

But it turns out that Mrs. Biden wasn’t even a very good teacher, either.

According to a website that rates professors, Biden’s students didn’t think much of her as an instructor:

“please do NOT take her. She simply doesn’t care about teaching. we spent one class each week in the lab doing NOTHING. A very tough grader.”

“Worst English teacher at Nova. I should have read the comments before choosing her for my first semester. She grades things by her way, there is no rubric. I came to her personally to change my grade and showed her all the work I’ve done and she gave me a B then later on she didn’t recall giving me that grade so she gave me a D.”

Meanwhile, the Left ignored the fact that Ben Carson is a bona fide medical doctor.

Now you know why the University of Delaware gave the 55-year-old Jill Biden her Ed.D., and that’s because her husband was a senator. Either that or it’s because U of D is a garbage institution that doesn’t care about the quality of its programs.

You know, I may take back my reference to Jill Biden as a “Ring Knocker.” She may be, like an overbearing service academy graduate, “a smug a**hole.” But those who graduate from service academies have actually accomplished a lot in earning their credentials. Biden, however, not so much.

Jill Biden has a love affair with commas. Her writing is sophomoric, puerile, and without logical structure.

    • GWB says:

“Love affair with commas” says the Buckley Comma man. 😉

(I am a Buckley Comma man, too.)

      • Chris Thompson says:

What’s a Buckley comma? Same as an Oxford comma? Serious question.

        • GWB says:

Yes, I think they are the same (comma before the “and” in a list of more than two items).
          But I liked William F Buckley. 😉

      • Brian Brandt says:

The debate over commas is often a pretty inconsequential one, but it was anything but for the truck drivers. Note the lack of Oxford comma — also known as the serial comma — in the following state law, which says overtime rules do not apply to:

The canning, processing, preserving, freezing, drying, marketing, storing, packing for shipment or distribution of:

        (1) Agricultural produce;

        (2) Meat and fish products; and

        (3) Perishable foods.

Does the law intend to exempt the distribution of the three categories that follow, or does it mean to exempt packing for the shipping or distribution of them?

Delivery drivers distribute perishable foods, but they don’t pack the boxes themselves. Whether the drivers were subject to a law that had denied them thousands of dollars a year depended entirely on how the sentence was read.

If there were a comma after “shipment,” it might have been clear that the law exempted the distribution of perishable foods. But the appeals court on Monday sided with the drivers, saying the absence of a comma produced enough uncertainty to rule in their favor. It reversed a lower court decision.

In other words: Oxford comma defenders won this round.

“That comma would have sunk our ship,” David G. Webbert, a lawyer who represented the drivers, said in an interview on Wednesday.

In short, it refers to service academy seniors who bang their huge class rings on desks
More importantly, it applies to those who use their Academy connections to advance/slide by, replacing integrity and quality with what is a form of nepotism.

In all my time, I never saw someone do that – except among certain groups of flyers. But I know it did happen.

We hated it for its contempt for educators.
Well, there’s one sure way to solve that: become less contemptible.

Oh, look at all the hackles rising! While I think the world of real teachers, I loathe almost all ‘educators’. Because, quite simply, they’re the folks who feel the need to invent “new” ways of doing math, and give us crappy Freudian methodologies for ensuring self-esteem and fancy words for crap people have been doing for at least several thousand years. Given the stories I’m hearing of Winnie The Flu home-bound students and their teachers, I would have to say that ‘educators’ are a blight on society and should be put to work doing something more constructive – like making salt out of seawater by hand-fanning the ocean.

    Either that or
Embrace the power of “and“, Kim.

The whole thing isn’t that we shouldn’t really call someone with a Doctorate a “Doctor”. I’m okay with that. Just like I’m okay with Academy grads telling their stories (mostly). It’s that she insists. That’s arrogance. That draws attention to the quality (or lack thereof) of your work. That has people looking to tear you off your little pedestal. Humility is a much better trait. But I think we’ve seen this last year that Jill has very little of that – but excels in ambition and hubris.

I say we drop this little tiff and let the jerks stew in their cockalorum. (Yes, I learned a new word, and I like it!)

In every university, almost without exception, the School of Education is the rump of the system, with its student having the lowest SAT scores and the highest GPAs. Inflated grades provide validation for unearned self-esteem. Like addicts, they become dependent on worthless accolades.

“Dr.” Jill is a prime example of the system.

    • Kim Hirsch says:

I would add to that the Fill-in-the-Blank “Studies.” Like “Women’s Studies.” “Racial Studies.” It never ends. And none of these require much cerebral power, just a lot of contrived grievances.

  • E.W. says:

Y’know “Vice-principal Jill Biden” would be an appropriate title that matches her degree. (I would ask ever person who wants to call her “ Dr.” if they call every superintendent, principal, etc that title.)
Furthermore, it has a certain poetic symmetry with “Vice-president Joe Biden” which is what I prefer to refer to him as.

  • Nitay Arbel says:

As a final paper on a course, with all the filler cut out, this might deserve a B. If this is worth a “doctorate”, I am Pope Luna.

  • Rose says:

I don’t care to weigh in on the relative merits of Ph.D versus Ed.D, but did expect her paper would include educational theory. I had thought in her role as an adjunct, she was helping to prepare future teachers. Apparently she teaches remedial writing and reading. While everyone is applauding her for continuing to work, I think of the number of adjuncts who teach their classes at multiple schools just to make the rent.

Having worked in student retention at a community college for 20 years, I found her report to be pretty superficial and her recommendations for resolution incomplete. It wasn’t horrible – just not a of “there, there”.

  • Nathan says:

This has been floating around the internet lately, have you seen it?

Rachel:[to nurse]:Excuse me, I’m here to see my father. My name is Rachel Green.
    Ross:And I’m Dr. Ross Geller.
Rachel: Ross, please. This is a hospital, OK? That actually mean something here.

  • Hominem Humilem says:

Jill Biden should be addressed as Dr. only to the extent that we do the same with Bill Cosby and Shaquille O’Neal, who earned Ed.D degrees from better schools than the one she graduated from.

  • Ann in L.A. says:

The percentage breakdown by race isn’t as bad as it seems. Many Hispanics are also caucasians, which means percentages by “race” get messed up when you include, essentially, “language-of-ancestry” as well. It is not uncommon for such statistics to go over 100% because of it.

For me, the dissertation’s biggest problem was that its methodolgy consisted of sending out a couple of surveys, with poorly thought-out questions, and having a couple conversations. That’s not a heck of a lot of research to back a doctorate.

Further, the surveys were essentially push-polling. They had lots of questions about the increased services that community college should implement (better tutoring, child care, lower tuition, etc.), while saying little about students who were not prepared for college, would have been better off in a different form of training, or who couldn’t really afford to go in the first place. She was obviously angling for answers which would help her call for increased spending on child care, health care, mental health care, counseling, etc. In short, she wanted answers that place the burden for student retention on the college, not on the students, or the educational system they had grown up in.

    • GWB says:

      with poorly thought-out questions
Which should be a double-whammy against her. As a doctoral student, she should have a better grip on how to properly elicit good data through surveys. As an educator, writing out questions properly to elicit good responses (that actually demonstrate mastery of the material) is vital to test writing (homework, too, to be honest). (Yes, both of those would also exclude “push polling”.)

If her questions were poorly thought out, I would suggest she doesn’t deserve to even be a teacher, much less hold an Ed.D.

Okay, not to take away from USNA graduates, I worked at a job where 2/3 of the employees were USNA grads including the CEO (of maybe 90 people). Not me but I was not discriminated against because they were all good people.
I’ve read several articles by Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell, who not only deserve to be “Dr.” but also called “Sir”, and neither have a very good opinion of the Ed.D at all. A physicist can be John Doe PhD and Jill Biden can be called Jill Biden Ed.D. I’ll not refer to her as Dr. I worked with many electrical, mechanical, and civil engineers who were PhDs and merely called them by their first name. BTW, I have a mere BS in Electrical Engineering, I can do math!!

“The same people that refused to call renowned neurosurgeon Ben Carson ‘dr’ every time…now want us to do it for Biden.

    Can’t have it both ways.”

Surely you can and surely they will have it both ways. If you don’t call her Dr. Jill you’ll be called a big H8R.

  • […] Kim wrote about Jill’s “You know, the thing” late last year and you can read that here. But, Jill is the perfect female icon for the Democrat’s because she is not deep and neither […]

  • RAB4 says:

Funny how white, feminist privilege would be accurate here (in the past we might have called it upper class privilege), but instead it is misogyny to see it that way. As I write this I think of the transgendered who take away the arenas for women in sports. Jill Biden took away resources from serious students. In fact, she is mirroring their claim to choose the pronouns that they prefer and being offended and triggered if others don’t comply.
