Washington Post Column blames Reagan for Little Kim and his Nukes?

Disclaimer: this is not about Lil Kim the rapper. This is about the North Korean Dictator who is playing with nukes. Benjamin Young blames Reagan’s invasion of Grenada for the North Korean nukes? He wrote this column in the Washington Post.

Over the past few days, the United States and North Korea have become locked in nuclear brinkmanship. After North Korea declared that its ballistic missiles could hit anywhere in the United States, President Trump vowed that continued North Korean provocations would be “met with fire and fury and — frankly — power.” North Korea responded by threatening to attack the tiny island of Guam.

There has been a cold war since 1953.  The US has been on the North Korean border for decades.  There is open hostility towards Americans from the North Koreans.

But it was another tiny island that set the U.S. and North Korea down this path. Few Americans will recall the 1983 invasion of a small Caribbean nation thousands of miles from North Korea. But in fact, this conflict set the stage for the nuclear standoff today. It intensified the animosity between the two countries, sending North Korea on a quest for nuclear weapons to combat what it saw as a looming American threat.

Really? It is not like Kim Il Sung and his successors were not paranoid and psychotic and murderous or anything. No, it was Reagans fault for stopping a Stalinist dictator in our backyard.  I am thankful for a minor in history and an ability to know context.  This author is devoid of common sense it seems.  Moving right along to Kim being sad.

After observing the swift destruction of the Grenadian revolution, Kim Il Sung feared that Reagan would launch an invasion of North Korea similar to Operation Urgent Fury and overthrow his government in a matter of weeks. Reagan’s strict anti-communist policy and his increased commitment to the U.S.-South Korea military alliance — Reagan had ratcheted up joint military exercises on the peninsula — unsettled Kim Il Sung.

What struck me as odd was that this was Reagan’s fault?  Why Kim was a just poor innocent soul that the mean Americans scared.  Can you get eyestrain for too many eyerolls?

The North Korean media still regularly refers to the “illegal” invasion of Grenada as evidence of Washington’s ambitions to dominate the world. This event, and others like it, influence how North Korea negotiates with the United States.

North Korea is run by a Stalinist family with a nasty bloody history. Note that is absent from the column.  And the North Koreans have been stockpiling whatever weapons they can get for decades.

North Korea will never abandon its nuclear weapons program, because it believes that without it, nothing would deter an American invasion aimed at regime change. North Korea will not even establish a dialogue with the United States if the Trump administration insists on Kim Jong Un dropping his nuclear weapons program.

Seriously? Do you read this stuff in context?

Who are the Kims?

The fearful Stalinist Kim Il Sung was a mass murderer sir and a kidnapper.   Kim Jong Un keeps his boot is on the neck of the North Koreans to keep his family in power.

Kim Il-sung, in his 1946 decree “On Transporting Intellectuals from South Korea,” explained his desire to bring five hundred thousand people to the North to compensate for the mass exodus in the years leading up to the war. He envisioned an ambitious abduction project that would serve his regime while destabilizing other countries. It began with the South. An estimated eighty-four thousand South Koreans were kidnapped during the Korean War. For the first two decades after the 1953 armistice, the abductees were primarily South Korean fishermen whose boats had drifted too far up the coast. South Korea has confirmed that just under five hundred of its citizens are still held in the North.

A real standup guy. And this went on for decades and all kinds of unfortunate multinational abductees joined the South Koreans in hell. Make no mistake about it Mr. Young:  North Korea is hell on earth. And a paranoid hell at that.  The Kim family like their frenemy Mao and beloved Stalin murdered millions of Koreans.  And still is murdering their own people.

The column puts the blame on Reagan sending troops to Grenada.  The writer believes that this event in 1983 apparently caused North Korea to stockpile nukes.   He forgot that North Korea has hated the US since about 1950 when the US and our allies defended Seoul from an invading Communist army.  He ignored evidence that the North Koreans were and are terrified of a US invasion. By ignoring this history, the author appears to be defending the poor sweet Kim family.  Who is neither poor nor sweet.

    Very good summary, Gail.
But I’m afraid you’re wasting your time.
There is no cure for Mr. Young’s particular type of stupid.

Well, that quote, taken out of the article’s context is absolutely right. NK will NOT abandon its nukes because it DOES think the US is out to get it (the definition of paranoia, to a point). And it won’t even really talk to us if we don’t drop the anti-nuke rhetoric. But that is because of the paranoia in NK, not because we’re being bellicose.

This is part of the problem the left has with its Overton Window movement philosophy – everyone must meet in the middle, no matter how daft one of the people is, nor how far off from a reasonable position they might be. It benefits them (the left) in our legislatures (of course, they’re the daft ones in that scenario, so…). But it becomes rapidly more insane of a concept when dealing with paranoid, delusional world leaders.
“You must all wear cake on your head! And mason jars on your feet! Otherwise, you must mean to conquer me, and I must therefore develop nukes and the means to use them on you!”
“Ummm, how about if we just wear the cake on our head?”
“OK, I will just develop nukes, then, and not the ICBMs. I feel much less paranoid now.”

    Whereas the MacArthur answer is:
“How about we just eliminate this nutcase with a well-executed operation, and we nuke the Chinese if they intervene?”

I think it could be argued that NK made a decision to accelerate* its plans based on Grenada. But, yeah, it was already bat guano crazy and dangerously paranoid. Nothing Reagan did changed them into that. And nukes were an inevitable progression of that paranoia and delusion.

(* So it took the NorKs 34 years to get to this position after Grenada? I wonder if this guy knows that actually makes the argument for having had the war 30+ years ago, and not dorking around with crap like “strategic patience” or sanctions? And that it argues for nuking China now, not later?)

Exactly. But this guy was so excited he could try and blame Ronaldus Maximus that he missed all context and common sense. China and the Kims hate each other which was the one thing that kept the bat guano crazy in check. And guess who else was right? GWB and the Axis of Evil….. Guessing that this historian will have a hissy.

Oh, and you totally forgot to mention the assassination of family members in your laundry list of paranoid, bat guano crazy actions.
