U. of North Carolina Textbook-Holocaust Victims Not Mentally Tough

As if you needed another reason not to spend your hard-earned greenback dollars on a college education for your sweet cherub, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill provides about six million of them. The textbook for a class called “21st Century Wellness” is a book which posits that those killed in the Holocaust didn’t have enough self-esteem or wherewithal or some other kind of touchy feely elephant excrement that totally dishonors their deaths.

Nope, I take that back. Make that sixteen million reasons. You have to include the ten million military personnel who died to stop the Nazi’s Final Solution. Maybe the military personnel should have given themselves some positive affirmations. That would have stopped the bullets, grenades and landmines that killed them. How much of an over-educated moron do you have to be to even think this stuff.

From the “Washington Examiner”:

Ron Hager, a co-author of the textbook and a Brigham Young University professor, said that the Holocaust reference is to suggest that “a sense of inherent self-worth can be a source of strength or motivation that can help those struggling.”

Hmmm, tapping into your “inherent self-worth” will stop you from being shot in a ditch in the fantasy world in which Mr. Hager lives.

From the “News & Observer”:

“One of the overriding purposes of our text is to encourage and empower individuals to take responsibility for their own good health through the everyday choices they make,” he wrote. “We focus on helping individuals gain a perspective of inherent self-worth that can motivate them to make the best choices and optimize their potential for a healthy and long life (compression of morbidity) especially when combined with solid health related information supported by research.”

So, they should have chosen not to be Jews, gays or handicapped and born in Europe at that time?

This guy doesn’t just blame the Jewish people for being killed in the Holocaust. He takes on women and dieting too:

Another point criticized in the book is the assertion, “When obsessed with weight, many if not most women and some men have become habitual dieters.”

Though some have viewed the statement as sexist, Hager said it is backed up by research.

“There is solid survey data that suggest that people (more women than men) go from one diet fad to another with limited success and that of those who are obsessively concerned about body weight, size, shape, etc., seek quick fixes,” Hager said.

Dude, how many post graduate course do you need to be that epically benighted?

Here Mr. Hager introduces himself for the textbook:

Again, dude, you are going to deteriorate as you age. You may be better off than some of your peers who don’t have the same genetic makeup. But, you gonna start decomposing while you still alive. True fact.

Victory Girls’ own Kim Hirsch wrote a post on why Millennials don’t know about the Holocaust. Read it here. So many slaughters in the history of the world. If only they had known about their “intrinsic worth”.

Read history and great literature to your children. Send them to trade school. Let them because nurses or technicians. In the name of those slaughtered for who they are, don’t send them to UNC-Chapel Hill.

Ummm, that’s actually very factually true. Not seeing where there’s anything to criticize about it.

And you really should post the actual quote that’s got folks in a dither. Otherwise, it’s just outrage churning.
Because the very first sentence of the article tries (intentionally or not) to warp the sentence into something it is not.
those killed in the Holocaust “did not tap into the strength that comes from their intrinsic worth succumbed to the brutality to which they were subjected.”
It’s grammatically incorrect, possibly because it’s trying to shove the first part into the non-quoted bit. And, unless the book explicitly states that it’s speaking of those killed, the quote does NOT necessarily support that.
What the quoted bit DOES say is that those who didn’t have a great deal of self-worth succumbed to the brutality. Nothing in there about those directly massacred. It seems (admittedly, it IS a partial quote) clearly to mean those who died as a result of the conditions.
Now, while that’s a stretch, it’s not an outrageous concept. And it’s a common statement about those in prison and such: those with some inherent idea of self-worth have an easier time surviving.

Other bits stated in the article are pretty sensational, too. And always only partially quoted.
While there’s possibly plenty to be outraged about, the article is a minimal aid to actually understanding the problem.

I also would like to got a bit more deeply into Dr. Hager’s quotes. I watched the clip in its entirety and he seems to be giving good advice. The Holocause is something of a ‘third rail’ topic. I would suggest that the examples he draws from it are akin to survival stories we hear in which a strong will to survive and a positive mental attitude help get an individual through instead if giving up.

Some educated derelict marshmallow soft weenie professor wouldn’t be physical enough to last in the ghetto. They would have him roasting on a spit in no time.
