Travesty: Army May Decide Bowe Bergdahl Is ‘Entitled’ To $300G In Back Pay [VIDEO]

It seems that some in the Army want to quadruple down on the travesty of injustice surrounding that deserter named Bowe Bergdahl.

The U.S. Army is set to decide whether Pvt. Bowe Bergdahl is entitled to as much as $300,000 in back pay and other benefits he amassed during his captivity with the Taliban. [Emphasis Added]

Let’s stop right there. Let’s recap the little jerk’s antics shall we?

  • Bergdahl didn’t like being in the Army
  • Bergdahl thought he’d smile, look purdy, fire his weapon once in a while and get all sorts of medals and rewards. He didn’t.
  • Bergdahl decided he didn’t like the FOB he was stationed at. Didn’t like the military politics and the U.S. political landscape at the time and threw a tantrum.
  • Bergdahl took off his uniform, folded everything very neatly on his bunk and walked off base leaving everything including his weapons behind. He did so ON PURPOSE.
  • Bergdahl wanted to make political points by deserting and supposedly the Army chain of command would listen.
  • Instead fellow soldiers spent the next few weeks and months looking for his scrawny ass and getting blown up and killed while doing so!

These men came home in a flag draped coffin because of Bergdahl’s asinine temper tantrum.

Berdgahl, meanwhile, got to be a guest of the Taliban for 5 years. Was he a prisoner? Yes. Was he a prisoner of war? IMO…NO.

Bowe Bergdahl

He WILLINGLY deserted and thus the consequences of his actions are on his head and his head alone.

But, meanwhile, this asinine back pay thing? It’s “complicated” or something.

Captive soldiers normally receive special compensation worth around $150,000 in addition to hostile-fire pay and their basic pay they accumulated during the captivity. But determining whether Bergdahl should receive the back pay is not as clear-cut.

But Bergdahl pleaded guilty to desertion in court, complicating whether the army will consider him as a prisoner of war and thus entitled to back pay and compensation.

“My understanding is there has to be an administrative determination of his duty status at each point, from the time he was captured until now,” an army official told the Army Times. “In order to figure out what he’s owed, you’re basically going to have to start from that point of captivity.”

The official told the Times that it is possible Bergdahl will be given only his accumulated basic pay during his five-year captivity.

NO. He deserted. Period. IMO that should make him completely ineligible for any back pay whatsoever!

It was a complete travesty when Judge Nance hamstrung Lady Justice by giving Bergdahl a slap on the wrist and letting him walk freely out of the courtroom last Friday. Keep in mind that a plea of misbehavior in front of the enemy carries a life sentence. Yet the verdict was?  ZERO jail time.

A complete and utter insult to all who are and have served.

But now, just a day before we celebrate all our Veterans who really DID serve with Honor and Distinction, we find out the Army is dithering about back pay??

Bowe Bergdahl willingly deserted his post. The ensuing search leads to wounded and killed American soldiers. His temper tantrum desertion leads to his capture by the Taliban. He’s rescued in exchange for letting five major terrorists go free. He pleads guilty to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. Gets a dishonorable discharge, a reduction in rank, and ZERO jail time.

Yet the Army may decide to hand over $300,000 in back pay for being a deserter who got himself captured by the Taliban??!!

If I were Lady Justice, I’d whip off that blindfold and beat some sense into the Army with those scales of hers.

Justice is supposed to be blind. Not stupid.

Please, PLEASE tell me this is a joke! Especially with Veterans Day tomorrow!

complicating whether the army will consider him as a prisoner of war

Complicating?!? It should flat out eliminate the possibility!

My understanding is there has to be an administrative determination of his duty status at each point

Yes, a Line Of Duty determination. It’s the same thing they do when deciding whether to pay for a soldier’s injuries when he crashes his car. Or dies in a glider crash. Whether what happened was something “in the line of duty” – which includes normal activities. So, if he was drag-racing, it might not be LOD. If he was driving home from leave, and not breaking any big rules (like being in his 16th straight hour of driving), it will be LOD.
If the deciders are more Army than petty bureaucrat, the LOD decision will be swiftly made against Bergdahl. If they go the other way, there will be a lot of finely split hairs involved.

  • Nina says:

Agreed. But if they do split a bunch of hairs because political correctness or FEELINGS or any other petty crap they can come up with and reward a deserter … the traditions of duty, honor, and country will be no more. 🙁

    • GWB says:

They need to select someone to do the LOD determination who is old-fashioned enough to be offended (without being overcome with their rage) at what Bergdahl did.

      I just hope it isn’t 2Lt Rapone………..

      • Nina says:

Yes, someone who knows that actions SHOULD have consequences. And sometimes those consequences need to take place no matter the regulations.

Rapone?? You just had to go there didn’t you??!! OOF

  • Steve S. says:

The Regs call for a hearing to consider the question, so a hearing there shall be.

The outrage begins when the hearing doesn’t immediately deny the award and then adjourn. Ten minutes tops?

    • GWB says:

This. The Army has to do the LOD determination. It’s the results that will be a problem.

      • Nina says:

That’s my concern about this. Yes, it has to be LOD determination …but when the verdict screamed political correctness instead of justice, I’m afraid this whole back pay thing will end up the same way.

I think BB will die as a victim of a blotched robbery that was never solved. No one will watch his six.

We need more people to read Uninted Consequences by John Ross. Once read you will understand how CW2 begins.

  • SFC D says:

This traitorous deserter is entitled to a short rope, a long drop, and an unmarked grave. Nothing more.
