On Wednesday, the House approved a bill that will ban abortions performed after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The bill had initially been scheduled for a vote in January, but was cancelled after a few Republicans complained that rape victims wouldn’t have time to report their assault to police before the procedure.

Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) and Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN), who had previously been opposed to the bill, were among 238 other Republicans and 4 Democrats that voted to approve the legislation.

Although Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell supports a similar version of the bill, the Senate has no immediate plans to pick up the tweaked legislation that requires a 48-hour waiting period, informed consent forms, and mandatory counseling for rape victims.

We all know, though, that the bill has little to no chance of becoming law as long as President Obama is in office. He has threatened to veto the bill, calling it “disgraceful” for House Republicans to push for a ban on late-term abortions.

“The bill continues to add a harsh burden to survivors of sexual assault, rape, and incest who are already enduring unimaginable hardship,” press secretary Josh Earnest said.

Sean Duffy (R-WI) gave a speech on the House floor in support of the bill. His rousing, passionate address takes direct aim at the White House and Democrat’s attacks on the bill that allege it’s cruelty.

“I’ve listened to the floor debate day after day .. about how they fight for the forgotten, they fight for the defenseless, they fight for the voiceless. And they pound their chest and stomp their feet. You don’t have anyone in our society that’s more defenseless than these little babies.

And we are not taking — I believe in conception. I know my colleagues can’t agree with me on that. Can’t we come together and say we are going to stand with little babies that feel pain, that survive outside the womb? Ones that don’t have lobbyists and money? Don’t we stand with those little babies?

If you stand with the defenseless, with the voiceless, you have to stand with little babies. Don’t talk to me about cruelty in our bill — when you look at little babies being dismembered, feeling excruciating pain, if we can’t stand to defend these children, what do we stand for in this institution?”

Am I the only one who is sick of this rape and incest reasoning to allow late-term abortions? Abortion supporters are acting as if most women running out to get an abortion after week 20 have been victims of sexual assault or incest. They aren’t.

And, isn’t 20 weeks long enough to make a decision of this magnitude? Do you really need more time than that? If you have, indeed, been raped and you don’t want to have your rapist’s child, wouldn’t you be able to make that decision before your 20th week of pregnancy?

Let’s just call it what it is. The Democrats don’t want this bill to become law because abortion is big business for them. They don’t care about the babies. They don’t care about women, and they definitely do not care about a victim of horrific rape or incest.

Just something else for the Republican lapdogs in the Senate to cave on.
    God help us.

I concur for the most part. But I do have to ask, except for federal lands and organizations (like the military), what business does the federal gov’t have making this illegal within the states?

I can think of only one legitimate answer from the Constitution, but I wonder if anyone else will think of it.

Since no one else has spoken up, here’s the answer:
      Article 4, Section 4:

The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government, and shall protect each of them against invasion; and on application of the legislature, or of the executive (when the legislature cannot be convened) against domestic violence.
