The Hollywood Hypocrisy of The Golden Globes

When the denizens of Hollywood aren’t drooling through their capped teeth at the idea of President Oprah Winfrey, they are busy spreading their hypocrisy throughout the media world. Apparently, not everyone wore black to the Golden Globes and Hollywood, as an entity, cannot allow independent thought. Blanca Blanco, allegedly an actress, wore a red dress, sort of.

Blanca Blanco in a red dress.

How dare she not show solidarity with all the other walking Barbie and Ken dolls.

She should be shamed for not being a team player? Stop the madness. What team? What did the women in Hollywood (Meryl, Oprah, Angelina, I am looking at you) do to protect the younger women? That would be playing as a team. Hypocrisy!

And, I kind of agree with the statement that we are tired of that brand of sexy. I am going to show that I am empowered by wearing as little as possible. But, don’t you dare notice or look at me. These same women complain about the hyper-sexuality in television, movies and advertising. It’s the hypocrisy of the whole #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.

The definition of hypocrisy: noun, plural hypocrisies.

1.
a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess.
2.
a pretense of having some desirable or publicly approved attitude.
3.
an act or instance of hypocrisy.

They knew. They all knew. Anyone who has ever worked in an office or factory or ballet company hears the rumors and innuendo. Meryl Streep and Oprah Winfrey knew, as did anyone who has ever dreamed of being a star. They are trading on their faces and their bodies. The day they don’t get looked at is the day their careers are over. And, like I wrote above, they did nothing to protect each other.

Solidarity in black

All human beings, not just men, are visually oriented. We want to look at beautiful people and things. We also look at train wrecks. When women dress in an overtly sexual manner, they are begging to be looked at by everyone. They are not asking to be assaulted or harassed. Every female over the age of 10 knows exactly what I mean.

Victory Girls’ Darleen Click drew this example of Cognitive Dissonance

I have been accused of “fulfilling conservative stereotypes of stuffy Puritans who get offended at the hint of a boob.” I may be a woman of a certain age, but I love to dress sexy. The hint of a boob or, indeed an entire boob, doesn’t bother me at all. As women, being dishonest about our motives let’s us down and makes us look stupid. And, yes, there is hypocrisy.

Marilyn Monroe in a turtleneck is much sexier than Blanca Blanco in an almost dress.

There is a story from the book “Marilyn and Me” by Susan Strasberg. Susan Strasberg and Marilyn Monroe are walking down the street in New York City. No one is noticing them. Susan Strasberg says to Marilyn that she cannot believe she is walking down the street with the world famous movie star and sex goddess and no one is looking. Marilyn Monroe immediately changes her body language. Suddenly, they are mobbed. We women know how to get looked at when we want to be looked at at any time.

If women really and truly want to be taken seriously and shine a bright light on the bad behavior of men and women in power, there are a few things that need to be done.

1. Protect other women. All those women knew. The women in powerful positions in Hollywood knew. There are women who are studio heads and executive producers. Those women, like Meryl Streep and Oprah Winfrey, need to own their complicity in the abuse and harassment.

2. Be honest with our selves. I know when I am using my feminine wiles to get want I want. I am not so heinously ugly or old that I cannot use a pout or a smile to get my way. And, I always dress to show off my physical assets. It greases the skids. I am honest.

3. Stop blaming men. Powerful people victimize those who are powerless. Male and female. And, if a man or woman is getting away with victimizing underlings, who is enabling the powerful person?

And for the love of all that is holy, stop with the #MeToo and #TimesUp bullying. Group think is ugly and dangerous. If Blanca Blanco had worn houndstooth check in solidarity with the University of Alabama, that would be her choice.

“Marilyn Monroe immediately changes her body language. Suddenly, they are mobbed.”

I remember an old line from Gina Lollobrigida [I think it was her]: ‘What’s the difference between a pretty girl and a sexy woman?” Answer: ‘Twenty pounds.”

Every man comes to ‘read’ this behaviour and every woman knows this – and uses it when it suits her to manipulate men to her advantage. It’s not what ‘assets’ woman have, but how they use them. As for the scrawny, near naked posing ‘clothes racks’ on the various red carpets – more skin is definitely not sexy!
