Hillary: hey, who painted Our Lady of Guadalupe?

Our brilliant new Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, made a pilgrimage to Mexico, where she visited the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. While there, she asked a really stupid question:

During her recent visit to Mexico, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unexpected stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and left a bouquet of white flowers “on behalf of the American people,” after asking who painted the famous image.

… Mrs. Clinton was received on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. by the rector of the Basilica, Msgr. Diego Monroy.

Msgr. Monroy took Mrs. Clinton to the famous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which had been previously lowered from its usual altar for the occasion.

After observing it for a while, Mrs. Clinton asked “who painted it?” to which Msgr. Monroy responded “God!”

Clinton then told Msgr. Monroy that she had previously visited the old Basilica in 1979, when the new one was still under construction.

After placing a bouquet of white flowers by the image, Mrs. Clinton went to the quemador –the open air area at the Basilica where the faithful light candles- and lit a green candle.

Leaving the basilica half an hour later, Mrs. Clinton told some of the Mexicans gathered outside to greet her, “you have a marvelous virgin!”

Mary appeared to a poor Native American at Tepeyac, which is north of what is now Mexico City. The image of Mary was imprinted onto the tilma, or cloak, of St. Juan Diego in 1531. Almost five hundred years later it has not decayed. That is how the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was “painted”.

Now, I realize that not everyone is inherently familiar with the story, nor does everyone who visits the shrine make sure to familiarize themselves before visiting. But Hillary Clinton is not a tourist making a casual visit; she’s the Secretary of State making a trip on behalf of, according to her own words, the American people. Was there no one who told her that she should learn about Our Lady of Guadalupe before going on the trip, since the idea apparently never crossed her own mind?

And it gets better. Hours after laying flowers at the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Protectress of the Unborn, she accepted Planned Parenthood’s highest honor: the Margaret Sanger award.

Today Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to receive the highest award given by Planned Parenthood Federation of America — the Margaret Sanger Award, named for the organization’s founder, a noted eugenicist. The award will be presented at a gala event in Houston, Texas this evening.

Aren’t you glad we got all of those ignorant hicks from the Bush administration out, and have diplomatic geniuses like Obama, Biden, and Clinton in?

What do you expect from somebody who brought that silly reset button prop to Russia? I used to think Madeline Halfbright’s running after Arafat’s car was the lowest a Secretary of State could go but with Hillary, it looks like she’s off to a good start at plumbing the depths even lower!

And we have some so-called “Republicans” who are already saying 2012 is a lost cause.

In my opinion, this is just scratching the surface, and by itself it is plenty enough to completely turn things around. YES I said all by itself: This juxtaposition on the left side of the aisle, between Catholic and Catholic-wannabe stuff, and…well, let’s call it what it is. Baby-body-parts-harvesting.

Republicans talk about familee-valyooz and then get caught cheating on their wives — they have to take it on the chin for that stuff. And they do. And they should. But this is oh so much more disturbing, this wooing of the Catholic vote followed by playing to the Doctor Frankensteins. It is utterly irreconcilable.

I’d think the successor to Thomas Jefferson would be savvy enough to not place these highly public displays right next to each other. Shouldn’t she be? Maybe I’m asking way too much. Either way, this beats the “who painted that?” thing by a mile-and-a-half. Easily.

    So creepy.

Wouldn’t be surprised if she next claims she was “surprised to discover that St. Juan Diego is actually a distant relative of hers…”

I am also wondering how long before some enterprising fact checker notices that she was actually in Maine (or somewhere other than Mexico) for the entire year she claims to have visited the Basilica…

    Damn – I just did –

Here’s the problem – the new one was built between 1974 and 1976, the new Basilica has a circular floorplan so that the image of the Virgin can be seen from any point within the building. Guessing it was finished by 1979. Considering they built the new one because the old was unsafe (sinking foundation) I doubt she visited the old one (or did and somehow managed NOT to visit the new one?)
