#Harvey: Trump Says Texans Can Handle Anything

Already classified as one of the worst storms in U. S. history, Hurricane Harvey dumped trillions of gallons of water on Houston and surrounding areas. Now, twelve years since Hurricane Katrina battered New Orleans and parts of Louisiana, Texas prepares for a third band of storms to hit an already devastated area. Amidst all this, President Trump, along with First Lady Melania Trump and key members of his administration arrived in Texas to be briefed on the current situation and to reassure the state that the federal government was not going to stand in silence as the state fights to recover.

The President chose to fly in to Corpus Christie, where Hurricane Harvey did not cause as much damage as in other areas. As noted in this article from the New York Times, his decision was based on wanting to be as close to the worst damage as possible without having his presence disrupt the ongoing rescue efforts.

During his comments, President Trump assured those impacted by Harvey that, “We are going to get you back and operating immediately.” He went on to say, “It’s epic what happened, but you know what, it happened in Texas, and Texas can handle anything.”

The First Lady noted what most Texans already knew: “What I found to be the most profound during the visit was not only the strength and resilience of the people of Texas, but the compassion and sense of community that has taken over the state.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott told reporters, “I want to express my deep gratitude to the president, for him and his entire cabinet and staff for what they’ve done over the past couple weeks,” he said. “The president and his cabinet remained in constant contact with me and my staff, and they all had one thing to say. Texas, what do you need? How can we help?”

Putting action to the President’s words, the U. S. Department of Transportation announced it has made immediately available approximately $25 million to help repair roads and bridges damaged by Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath. It is still early days, but the current Administration is proving it won’t waste time in doing what needs be done in the face of disaster.

Let’s not forget that Mississippi got it’s butt kicked by Katrina. You know…that state just to the east of Louisiana? The state that the Seattle Times thinks is next to Georgia? Untold damage was done there. Far more damage than what happened in New Orleans. Why everyone thinks New Orleans was the only place Katrina did her business is beyond me.

You’re right and I haven’t forgotten Mississippi and the destruction it suffered as a result of Katrina. What I referred to was the actual date Katrina first hit New Orleans which was, iirc, before it hit Mississippi. If I’m wrong, my apologies.

      • Mrs.M says:

I understand. I just get irritated when the only city you hear anyone talk about is New Orleans, when there were so many other areas even harder hit.

        • Amanda Green says:

I don’t blame you. Having grown up in the DFW area, we have that feeling when the first thing someone says is “oh, that’s where Kennedy was killed.” I do plan, when we get some better numbers on the impact of Harvey — on not only Texas but Louisiana as well — to see how they compare with Katrina’s impact, including in Mississippi, and how the responses to the two differed.

Could it be because for the most part, the folks in Mississippi pulled on their boots, and took care of business afterwards, while the fools in New Orleans whined, cried, looted, killed, and made noise about being a “chocolate city” and how it was all Bushes fault?….

          • Amanda Green says:

            There is that possibility.

Notice the difference in the coverage of Harvey by the MSM. I keep expecting to see more criticism of how the government has been handling things. Instead, we get idiocy like the Hebdo image Kim talks about here:

Or the gal who claims that natural disasters don’t really bring out the best in people and all the stories you are seeing are just propaganda. Tell that to the good folks who are donating to help out or who have come from all over the country to help mount water rescues.

    –President Donald Trump

“Twas nice of President Trump to give Texans some ego-boo but I dunno ’bout the truth of what he said. I’ve known Texans to freak and become unable to handle themselves at the sight of a California license plate.

I live in Corpus Christi and was a volunteer driver for the President’s entourage.

    • Amanda Green says:

I hope you and yours managed to stay at least relatively dry and didn’t suffer much damage because of Harvey.
