Happy Veteran’s Day

To all those who are serving or have served: thank you.

There are not words to adequately thank those who stood up and answered the call to serve their country. There are not words to adequately describe the gratitude and humility I — and most Americans — feel.

From the veterans who fought to liberate Europe in World War II, those who fought in Vietnam and Korea, and to those who are fighting to bring freedom to the Middle East — we are forever in your debt. Each and every person serving in our military is a hero, and they deserve our thanks and our support.

This has been posted on a few different blogs now (I was surprised to see it on DailyKos, as they only had one diary thanking veterans), and I thought it was a touching tribute.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Also, a video tribute from Montgomery Gentry.

So today, make a point of showing your thanks. If you know a veteran, say thank you. You could make a donation to the Project Valour-IT program at Soldiers Angels (I recommend joining the Army team, personally) to show your support for injured veterans of the War on Terror. If there’s a memorial to veterans in your community, visit it and pay your respects. However you choose to do it, in your own personal way, make sure to say thank you.
