The Democrats are trying. They are really, really trying. The problem is, when you go for a makeover, you maybe shouldn’t stick with the same stylist.

So, after many late nights focus-testing a new slogan over wine (seriously, alcohol had to have been involved here), the Democrats began a slow roll-out of the new slogan.

You know who hated the new slogan? Other Democrats.

Despite sounding like FDR was writing promotional ads for Papa John’s Pizza, the Democrat leadership is doubling down on the new message. They’re also doubling down on their other new strategy: blaming Hillary Clinton for the 2016 loss.

“Yeah… if only I had not tried to hide emails, or hadn’t put classified information on a private server, or let Anthony Weiner anywhere near my campaign….”
No, REALLY.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer ripped his former colleague, Hillary Clinton, over her election loss to President Donald Trump and her subsequent efforts to explain why she lost. “When you lose to somebody who has 40 percent popularity, you don’t blame other things—Comey, Russia—you blame yourself,” Schumer told The Washington Post. “So what did we do wrong? People didn’t know what we stood for, just that we were against Trump. And still believe that.”

Hence, the new sloganeering.

“Republicans talk in headlines; Democrats speak in fine print,” conceded Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who co-chaired a team of House lawmakers tasked with leading the revamp. “That ends this week. We’re going to make sure that we’re able to reach the American people in a clear and compelling fashion.”

“A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future” is the new slogan hatched after months of strategy sessions on Capitol Hill and late-night dinners at Washington restaurants hosted by Schumer, Pelosi, Jeffries and other rank-and-file House and Senate lawmakers.

Pass the popcorn, please. And PLEASE keep Schumer and Pelosi at the front of the line, trying to promote themselves as the vanguard of a new and improved Democratic party. I’m sure that is a winning strategy.

While the crazy train that is the Democratic party tempts me to buy stock in popcorn futures, the GOP needs to get its own house in order and get that laser-like focus that the Democrats think they have. Eventually, the Democrats WILL coalesce around a better slogan than the one they’ve thought up over drinks, and a better spokesperson than anyone in the current leadership. And if the Republicans can’t point out their own successes… well, what was the point of winning the election, again?
