Democrats learning to talk to real people?

I confess I am amused.  Almost a week after the inauguration, the Democrats are trying to figure out what to do next. Their tidal wave of losses in 2016 (down ticket went Republican also) makes the party nervous. So as part of their strategy for the next two years, the Democrats are trying to reach out to these icky little people who voted for Trump. There is this minor problem: Democrats live and work and rarely venture out of their comfort zone or bubble. So, they have a conference this week to discuss strategy and branding. Politico lists the sessions here and they have to figure out how to talk to real people. On a side note, the Democrats branded themselves for the people and the irony is almost painful. Funny but painful.

Senate Democrats geared up for battle with President Donald Trump by preparing to talk to people who voted for him — and by hearing from one of his arch-nemeses.

Hmmm, one may ask if they ever did this in the past but then I look at my state’s Senators: Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters. And not seeing them walking through factories (UAW halls and universities yes) or in a tool and die shop or showing up on the West side of Michigan much. Unless it is an election year. So maybe this is needed. But wait there is more!

Former Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear (D), along with Sens. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), held a session on “speaking to those who feel invisible in rural America,” according to the schedule. Other sessions were along similar lines: “Listening to those feel unheard” and “Rising America — They feel unheard too.”

Really? Seriously you do not know how to do this? And what tangible things other than whining and victim speak do you offer us invisible folks or our rural cousins? Well Lizzie Warren (the same one who used a Native American scholarship which was meant for actual Native American scholars) and friends have some advice. And ideas on defining themselves? Gee maybe this is why they lost?

On Thursday Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) will discuss political tactics for the midterm election and Democrats will strategize on how to define themselves and Trump. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) will talk about “Triangulating Trump,” emphasizing that they can go around Republicans by trying to work with Trump on infrastructure, outsourcing and trade.

Incidentally, Lizzie Warren is the very image of an elitist.  How can you miss that one?  Leaves me shaking my head. Yeah that will get our blue collar and farming families to stand with you and your elitist friends. Toots, people want jobs, a sense of security and to not be treated like preschoolers. And to be treated with a semblance of respect. Is that too much to ask? If you are the Democrats, the answer apparently is yes. So, my advice to the Democrats is to be ready to lose and lose until you figure out who you are and what you stand for. And whether that is in line with the rest of us.
