The magic number was seven. It took seven separate accusers, plus one photo, to get Al Franken (D-SNL) to resign his Senate seat.

Of course, an eighth accuser had her story published today as well.

In a lengthy piece for the Atlantic, journalist and radio host Tina Dupuy accused the Democratic senator of putting “his hand on my waist, grabbing a handful of flesh…Then he squeezed. At least twice” while the two posed for a photo at the party.

“It shrunk me,” Dupuy, who had been married for two years at the time of the alleged sexual assault, wrote in the Atlantic. “It’s like I was no longer a person, only ornamental. It said, ‘You don’t matter—and I do.’ He wanted to cop a feel and he demonstrated he didn’t need my permission.”

The party was hosted by Media Matters for America, a progressive news watchdog site that is known for its aggressive criticism of conservative journalists and media outlets, including its “War on Fox News.”

But yesterday was really the tipping point, when a flood of Democrats – including DNC chair Tom Perez – stampeded over Franken to the cameras or to Twitter to declare that he needed to resign.

The Minnesota senator finally got up in front of his colleagues today to do so, but had plenty to say on his way out the door.

Of course, “whataboutisms” were in full play.

He also took a shot at Republicans on his way out the door.

“There is some irony that I am leaving while a man who bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office, and a man who preyed on young girls runs for Senate with the full support of his party,” said Franken, referencing President Trump and Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore.

We are each accountable for our own sins, Al. You have eight women who now say that you groped them. The Democrats finally decided that you were of no more use to them, especially since Minnesota has a Democrat governor who will replace you with another Democrat. You are a liability and a sleaze.

You can’t leave fast enough.

Best possible result for Republicans: since Mr Franken is staying in the Senate for a few more weeks, GOP can file an expulsion resolution for both Mr Franken and Roy Moore. That way, Alabama seat is saved for GOP, as state’s Republican governor can appoint a Republican to replace Mr Moore.

    “In the coming weeks”
Why not tomorrow? Why not Monday? What does he have in the works that he has to delay this to “the coming weeks”?

Lots of difference between VGB’s headline “Franken will resign” and CNN headline “Franken is resigning”. I know which will continue to be a trusted source for information, considering Franken is still in office.

He hasn’t resigned. Sounds like the negotiations are still going on.

I detect Lucy teeing up the football for Charlie Brown. Franken will resign “in the coming weeks”. Yeah, but once Judge Moore is elected by Alabamans Franken will crawfish and claim that the freshman Republican Senator did much worse things then he did, which by the way he has no clear memory of, so therefore no need to resign. The roll of Charlie Brown is played by the Roll-Over Party and Moore hating Conservatives.

  • GTB says:

Well, think about this, if they can force Franken to go, they can Trump too. Is that what you guys want?
