Abortion for Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day — you either love it or hate it. One thing you probably never expected to think about on that day was abortion. Believe it or not, Planned Parenthood has found a way to market their trademark service on a day meant to celebrate love.

House Democrat Leader Nancy Pelosi started a hashtag  — #WhatWomenNeed — in celebration of Valentine’s Day. That’s where things started to go South. Liberal politicians used the hash tag and pre-designed, heart-filled sign with a blank message area, to promote ideas like increasing the minimum wage.

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards took it to another level when she promoted a Vine video on Twitter advocating that #WhatWomenNeed for Valentine’s Day are “safe and legal abortions.”

In case you didn’t know, Planned Parenthood doesn’t have a great track record. While they try to downplay their abortion service, it’s actually a huge part of their  business. In fact, last year alone — according to their own annual report, they performed 333,964 abortions. Oh and did I mention they received 45 percent of their revenues from taxpayer-funded government sources during the 2011–2012 fiscal year?

Sarah Torre, a policy analyst at The Heritage Foundation, said, “Planned Parenthood regularly opposes commonsense laws that would protect women and children from abortion’s harms. They have been accused of neglecting the health and safety of patients and resisting efforts to improve safety standards…Women want and deserve more.”

Don’t take it from me, read what Casey Mattox of Alliance Defending Freedom wrote in 2012:

Last year the Board of Health issued emergency regulations, over the strenuous objection of Virginia Planned Parenthood, requiring health inspections of Virginia abortion clinics for the first time in two decades. As a result, initial announced inspections of abortion clinics were performed this year and the reports have been obtained by the Virginia Family Foundation via a Freedom of Information request.

As Victoria Cobb, President of VFF put it, “Some of this is just horrific.”

The Commissioner of Health reported that every one of the nine abortion clinics inspected had some deficiency.

These included the remains of unborn children and blood frozen to the bottom of freezers, sponges that were used to clean surgical implements for a full week without being changed—yes, the same sponge was used over and over and over for a week—and abortion clinic staff that admitted not knowing which instruments were clean and which were dirty. And the evidence keeps growing, 80 violations in just 9 clinics.

Again, these were not random inspections. The abortion clinics knew the inspectors were coming.

Pushing abortion on Valentine’s Day is a disgusting marketing ploy — some might say, the opposite of love. I read a beautiful essay on Tumblr this week and wanted to share a bit of it with you here:

As I lay here in this bed, ready to give my life for the child inside of me right now, it isn’t just because its my child. It’s because it is a human being. I am willing to die for an underdeveloped, dependent and inconvenient human being, because that human is my equal. You are my equal, your child is my equal, and I don’t have it in me to view my life as more valuable then anyone else’s. I can’t use any reason to take an innocent human being, dehumanize it, and place it under me. And I don’t want to.

Want a Valentine’s Day message of love? You got one in the paragraph above.

How does that work, again? “I love you, honey, so I’m killing our baby” I thought promoting abortions for Christmas was as low as it could go.

Even as you try to restrict the Constitutionally protected reproductive rights of your fellow Americans, you should have your facts straight and demonstrate at least a grade school level of numeracy.

Planned Parenthood provides nearly 12 million services each year to millions of people. These services range from education to contraception to cancer screening and STD testing. In that context, 334,000 abortions account for about 3% of the work they do. According to Planned Parenthood’s annual report, where you’ll also find the number you cite, abortion is the second smallest category of services they offer, coming in just above “Other” at 1%.

No one can honestly claim that 3% constitutes “a huge portion” of the work of Planned Parenthood. Making such a claim requires either a desire to manipulate one’s readers with propaganda, wholesale dishonesty or an intelligence level so low that the writer does not know enough about numbers to understand that they are most meaningful when they are discussed in the context of other numbers. So which might be the case here? I choose all of the above.

Nice try, shill. But when you count the ‘counseling’ sessions prior to an abortion in that other percentage of work, you might e slanting your statistics. Also, there is a tendency to do things like test the woman for STDs (including HPV, which counts as ‘cancer screening’, I’m sure) and hand her some condoms (so she won’t be back too soon) when she visits to obtain an abortion, so the abortion visit right there covers at least four r five different ‘services’.

But, you want it in context of numbers? Fine. How about over one million babies a year killed via abortion? Is that enough context for you? Planned Parenthood helps commit at least 1/4 of those.

  • I think the point was that abortion is a huge portion of revenue. How much is an abortion in America, 500 dollars?

Constitutionally protected what? If you ever bother to check the history of legal abortion you might find out why your country is not as progressive as you would like it to be. Until the 60’s you didn’t have enough communists and useful idiots to promote the killing of inconvenient humans. Those of us in socialist republics were not so fortunate. More than half of my generation was aborted. I would have been too if my mother hadn’t wanted another child.

Doesn’t the founding document of your country say something about all being created equal and with the right to life and liberty? I don’t know why you expect everyone to be ok with the notion that they are worthless unless somebody wants them.
