Abducted Dutch Journalist: I was repeatedly raped by the Taliban, but it’s OK because they respected me

Last year, Dutch journalist Joanie de Rijke had the bright idea to travel to Afghanistan to do a sympathetic interview with Taliban jihadists who had just killed ten French troops. Unsurprisingly, the jihadists were not in the mood to cooperate with her plan to conduct her sympathetic interview. They abducted her, held her captive for six days, repeatedly raped her, and freed her after receiving $137,000 (100,000 euros) in ransom money.

Mrs. de Rijke’s insane take on the ordeal? She’s not angry at the Taliban, because they “respected her” and “couldn’t help themselves”, and wants to make it clear that they are not monsters. She’s pretty pissed off at the Dutch and Belgian governments for taking so long to pay the ransom, though.

Mrs. de Rijke is an attractive 43 year old Dutch free-lance journalist with long blonde hair. Though she is a Dutch citizen, she does not live in the Netherlands but in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking northern half of neighboring Belgium. Most of the time she writes for P-Magazine, a glossy Flemish men’s weekly which features pictures of girls in lingerie and skimpy bathing suits, pornographic cartoons, articles about fast cars and political pieces.

Last Fall, de Rijke was traveling in Afghanistan for P-Magazine. Dressed in a burka, she tried to get in touch with the Taliban to do a human interest story about them. She managed to contact a group of Taliban fighters who had ambushed and killed ten French soldiers in August. De Rijke arranged an interview with Ghazi Gul, the commander of the group. When she and her interpreter arrived for the interview, however, Gul abducted her. He sent the interpreter back to Kabul with a message for P-Magazine demanding a ransom of $2 million for the journalist or he would slit her throat.

The Dutch government refused to pay. So did the Belgian government, although Michael Lescroart, P-Magazine’s editor, claims that initially the Belgian authorities were willing to pay but later changed their minds because they are “cowards.” Lescroart also said that he believed the group which abducted de Rijke were not real Taliban but

“some sort of Taliban ‘freelancers,’ scum who were after money. They did not want the real Taliban to know what they were doing, because the real Taliban do not accept that kind of behavior.”

Given P-Magazine’s anti-Americanism and leftist inclinations Lescroart probably harbors sympathy for the Taliban and finds it hard to accept that the “good guys” do evil things.

During her captivity, de Rijke was raped repeatedly by Gul. In her book In de handen van de Taliban, which she published last month, she writes that the Taliban commander

“could not control his testosterone. I had the impression that afterwards he regretted what had happened. He knew it was wrong.”

The noble savage even “invited her to a threesome,” i.e. to have sex with him and one of his three wives. “Ghazi was a very religious man. It is all so hypocritical. He was a complete fool,” she writes.

Because the Dutch and Belgian authorities refused to pay, P-Magazine raised 100.000 euros and offered it to Ghazi in return for the journalist’s release. The commander accepted. De Rijke was freed after six days in exchange for the money, which, says de Rijke, was transferred to the Taliban with the aid of the Dutch authorities.

… After her release, Joanie de Rijke, too, criticized the Dutch and Belgian authorities for their refusal to pay ransom. “The Belgians have done nothing. They said it was a matter for the Dutch. And the Dutch authorities said they never pay ransom. In Afghanistan they know well enough that Western governments pay up after an abduction. Germany, Italy and France have all paid ransoms.”

Though de Rijke was angry with the Dutch and Belgian authorities, she told the Dutch media in interviews given after her release that she was not angry with her abductors. “I do not want to depict the Taliban as monsters. I am not angry with Ghazi Gul. After all, he let me live,” she said. About the rape ordeal she declared that though the experience had been horrible, she was also shown respect. “It’s not black and white. These things can exist side by side. That doesn’t mean that I’m suffering from Stockholm syndrome.”

Geert Wilders set off a firestorm when he spoke about the abduction before the Dutch parliament. Apparently, using commen sense is outlawed in certain parts of Europe.

“She was raped, but she was not angry. The journalist who went looking for the Taliban in Afghanistan saw her curiosity end in a cruel ordeal of multiple rape. While this would make others angry or sad, this journalist shows understanding. She says: ‘They also respected me.’ And she was given tea and biscuits.”

… “This story is a perfect illustration of the moral decline of our elites. They are so blinded by their own ideology that they turn a blind eye to the truth. Rape? Well, I would put this into perspective, says the leftist journalist: the Taliban are not monsters. Our elites prefer to deny reality rather than face it. One would expect: a woman is being raped and finds this unbearable. But this journalist is not angry because the Muslim involved also showed respect. Our elites, whether they are politicians, journalists, judges, subsidy gobblers or civil servants, are totally clueless. Plain common sense has been dumped in order to deny reality. It is not just this raped journalist who is suffering from Stockholm syndrome, but the entire Dutch elite. The only moral reference they have is: do not irritate the Muslims – that is the one thing they will condemn.”

His words were met with instant condemnation. Femke Halsema of the Green Left Party yelled, “You should be ashamed of yourself.” Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende called Wilders’ statement “extremely painful and tasteless”, and said that he was shamefully abusing de Rijke by turning her into a defenseless victim again. Het Parool, distributed in Amsterdam, wrote that “everybody is angry with Wilders”. Conservative blog De Dagelijkse headlined the story with the proclamation that “Geert Wilders insults journalist raped by Taliban.”

This is a perfect example of the problems with so many liberals today. They are so terrified to call Muslim jihadists what they are — terrorists, murderers, monsters — not because they might be physically harmed in some way, but because they might be branded intolerant. People like Joanie de Rijke don’t look at themselves as sufferers of Stockholm Syndrome, they look at themselves as righteous and intellectual and open-minded and modern. What Mrs. de Rijke, along with so many others on the left, do not understand is that we do not call Muslim thugs and murderers (like the coward who abducted and raped her) monsters or terrorists simply because they are Muslim. We call them monsters or terrorists because they are murderers, rapists, and terrorists. Unfortunately, situations like this are black and white, even though liberals love the idea of moral relativism. There are no shades of grey. Murder is murder, just like rape is rape. A rapist cannot “respect” you, and rape is not something beyond a man’s control simply because of his “high testosterone”.

Also interesting is de Rijke’s description of Gul as a religious man, yet also a hypocritical one. She, of course, is holding Gul to Judeo-Christian religious standards, not Islamic ones. The truth of the matter is, that his actions would indeed be considered hypocritical (and monstrous) by Judeo-Christian standards. By Islamic standards, they are not only not hypocritical, they are expected and acceptable. Muslims are commanded in the Koran to rape and kill infidels, and de Rijke would be considered an infidel. Of course, that little nugget of truth does not fit very neatly into her enlightened liberal worldview, so she ignores it.

It’s terrible that Joanie de Rijke had to go through such an ordeal, even one that was partly of her own making. It was incredibly stupid and naive for her to go seeking Taliban jihadists, and not be at all prepared for what might happen to her. Still, as stupid and naive as her actions might have been, she didn’t deserve what happened. What she does deserve, though, is every ounce of condemnation that comes her way for her reaction after the ordeal. If she is truly so indoctrinated that she cannot condemn someone who abducted and repeatedly raped her, simply because he is a Muslim, then it seems to be that she is beyond all hope. And unfortunately, given the response of the Dutch community to the common sense of Geert Wilders, so is much of Europe.

By de Rijke’s own standards, if raping her is no big deal then Wilder’s supposed insult is of consequence at all. Thank God for Wilders or that whole corner of Europe might sink into total insanity.

At this point it is just ridiculous for the left to deny that the tolerance-socialism axis hasn’t become a religion unto itself. In an agnostic worldview, how can you possibly justify being repeatedly raped after being kidnapped and threatened with murder? It’s just sad that not only did this happen, but that so many hardcore libs like Mrs. de Rijke cannot comprehend a life without PC relativism to the point that direct action against them is not only forgiven (which is good) but completely ignored (not so great).

  • Rob Farrington says:

So a rapist gets ‘understanding’ because he happens to have dark skin, and is a member of a victimized culture (victimized by those EEEEVIL American crusaders, of course)?!?

Why? I don’t often get understanding and sympathy for being very uncomfortable with the idea of abortion, for instance (I’ve never raped anyone, although I HAVE had dirty looks after committing the cardinal sin of holding a door open for a woman).

To paraphrase Ali G, ‘Is it ‘cos I is white and Christian?’. Interesting that I could use fake tan, dye my hair black and call myself something like Mahmoud Islam, and automatically be held to a lower moral standard by many on the left.

    And we’re the racist bigots?

Intolerance, the one and only unforgivable sin under the religion of liberalism.

  • Scott Jacobs says:

Having seen a pic of her, I assure you that I – unlike the Taliban – would most certainly be able to “help myself”.

    Yarg…

This incident illustrates perfectly why moral relativism is a rot and weakness. Once you accept that, although something might always be wrong for you, it’s acceptable for someone else because it’s acceptable in their culture, you’ve really just accepted that it’s also acceptable to you, too, in certain conditions. Mrs. de Rijke’s acceptance of being raped, something she would almost certainly never countenance or accept if it happened in her own culture, by someone in a culture that she thinks of as finding the practice of rape acceptable (he “could not control his own testosterone”) for whatever reason is a perfect example. In other words, rape is unacceptable unless it is acceptable.

Perhaps she should be respectfully raped by a group of gentle black men next. Alternatively, maybe she can be treated to Coke and Lattes while being respectfully raped by pompous rich liberal men of any color. Would she feel the same afterward? How can anyone diminish rape? She owes her Government money. They should never have paid to free her from her self made, and apparently enjoyable, stay with the Taliban.

  • BlakeW says:

Didn’t we used to call that a “Train”. Quacks like a duck.

  • Spurwing Plover says:

DONT THEY STILL BELIVINE IS STONING RAPISTS TO DEATH OVER THERE IN THOSE MIDDLE EAST COUNTRIES?

  • KimWW says:

I can’t get over the fact that Wilders was so villainized for speaking against the journalist and the elite. Perhaps if he had raped her instead he would have been given more open-minded understanding.

  • KimWW says:

So, now that Ms. Rijke has dishonored her family by being raped, I do believe the rpoper Muslim tradition would be to kill her.

How can these people not see the incredible foolishness in the beliefs they are promoting with their actions?

  • BobV says:

Rape in the west: proof that all men are evil tools of the patriarchy who hate women and secretely want to hurt, murder, or otherwise oppress women even if they don’t always act on those ideas. The worst possible crime that can have no justification. Rape also includes instances where one or both was drunk, or changed their mind afterwards, or any heterosexual contact really.

Rape in the muslim world: wow, its so fun experiencing a new and vibrant culture. You can tell they respect her because they didn’t murder her afterwards, and beneath that gruff exterior I think he has a lot to teach us all about life, tolerance and culture. It’s so nice that they didn’t stone her to death as the harlot she obviously is, shows a lot of tolerance on their part.

This mentality can be fairly labeled a mental disorder and treated accordingly.

  • slamdunk says:

Not sure what to say on this one–I am speechless. Real life is just to creative to make up.

  • Dave M says:

No Spurwing Plover, you’re thinking of homosexuals. In van der Schtupenheimer’s defense, the Dutch word for “respect” is the same as the word for “rape” (like the Mandarin “crissitunity”), and their concept of hospitality is entirely based on sharing hash. So they could have set her on fire, if they threw a little hash on the fire with her, technically they’re being nice.

  • DavidL says:

Joanie de Rijke doesn’t seem to respect herself, and neither do her fellow liberals. Doesn’t seem worth the effort to care about her.

  • Roxeanne de Luca says:

The soft bigotry of low expectations rears its ugly head. “Testosterone?” I’m sorry, but all of the alpha males that I know manage to not only avoid taking women captive, raping them, threatening to slit their throats, and demanding randoms for their release, but they stay faithful to their wives.

What’s her rationale? He shows her more respect than she shows herself?

  • Nobi says:

Joanie de Rijke was very, very tolerant, yeah! Such a tolerance is almost insane.

  • Steffen says:

ummmmmmmmmmmmm they respected her? Was that before or after the kidnaping and later multirapes?

I am sorry but I miss the logic completly. AND I have been living and working in Germany for going on 17 years now!

  • Mat says:

Ms. de Rijke sounds like a total moron. She deserved exactly what she got for being so mind-numbingly stupid. You just cannot stop people like that who absolutely insist on acting so imbecilic. BTW, this rape stuff happens pretty regularly in the Scandinavian countries that host Muslim populations. Western women in Europe are routinely called “whores” by groups of Muslims. Their idea is that they’ll rape the Western women so that they keep their Muslim women pure. On a side note, Europe will be 25% Muslim in another decade or so. This isn’t going to get any better.

  • ModDem says:

Just like one cannot assume that all Muslims are terrorists one cannot assume that all Leftists are sympathetic to Muslim extemists who kidnap and rape victims. I think the general tone of this post is that the Left does this. We don’t. What happened to this woman is horrible and while we cannot know exactly what she went through one would assume she has problems because of it.
The Taliban should be either destroyed or imprisoned. Many on the left [even Al Frankin] supported the war in Afghanistan. We support war against Muslim extemists when it is warranted – Afghanistan was while Iraq [at first] was not. Although once it started you had to finish the job….
But too we on the Left have trouble with generalizations such as all Arabs and Muslims think alike or all of them support terrorists. They do not.

  • TexBob says:

Are you sure it was rape? Sounds pretty consentual to me. You cannot rape the willing and this Dutch perv sounds like she enjoyed it. I wonder if she works the red light district in Amsterdam.

  • Paul Marks says:

That the person works for a magazine that mixes soft core pornography with leftist poltics is also worthy of note – in that it sounds a bit like a Flemish version of Playboy.

The Playboy Empire supports rape – as long as it is the rape of conservative women of course. It also plugs Chinese propaganda films (recent ones – not 1950’s ones) about how well American Korean war P.O.W.s were treated by the Red Chinese, and how much nicer Mao’s China (Mao – the worst mass murderer in human history) was than the evil “oppressive” McCarthyite U.S.A. (by the way see M. Stanton Evans “Blacklisted by History” for the real history of the Senator for Wisconsin.

Why do the leftwing porn merchants ally with Islamic radicals who would ban porn? Simple enough – they do not think that far. All the left are concered with is death-to-the-West, they will ally with anyone (anyone at all) in order to achieve this objective. And what happens then? They do not really think about that.

  • Walker says:

P-magazine a left-wing publication? Lol. In Belgium P-magazine is considered to be a magazine of the right-wing. Don’t write about stuff you know nothing about.

  • marc duncan says:

Another left-winged (leftist) brainwashed feminist moron. She should be in a psychiatric hospital, tied to a bed.
Leftist is an incurable disease. Another proof.
